On Dec. 1st I won an auction for a Christmas Tree Pin. AFTER the auction was complete, the seller tells me he is going to be "away" after Dec. 7. Won't tell me how long, mind you, but he said he would send me the pin so I would have it by Christmas. So I sent my payment, and guess what? No pin. NOW what?

There is still time. I can see why you are not comfortable with no solid date. It may sound strange to you folks with real jobs but some of us can run off for a few days and not even buy a return ticket because we can come back when we feel like it. Boy do I miss punching a time clock, and having some straw boss freak out if you are 5 minutes late.

Uh, not if you have responsibilities that require otherwise. This has nothing to do with a "straw boss" or having a "real job". It has everything to do with not expecting your customers to adapt to whatever you "feel like". I dated a jerk like this - once.
Like many other sellers, this one easily could have notified bidders during the auction, and high bidders AFTER the auction, either how long he was going to be unavailable or when he would ship.
Of course, that would've taken some thought as to how his stranded, uninformed bidders might feel, which is probably beyond this character's ability...

Muriel, I think you should report him to Safe Harbor. If he knew he was going to be away, he should have planned to end his auctions long before Dec. 7.

I was thinking of doing that, but I'm trying to avoid the dreaded "neg". I don't have any yet and I imagine this guy would come back and say "I told her I was going away". Should I forward his e-mail to eBay and let them decide? It's been 15 days now.

Give him a few more days. Have you tried to call him. Even if he is away he may have someone answering his phone or he checks his messages.
I just had a priority package take 12 days to arrive to a buyer. The post office is busy. I am waiting on a money order that was mailed on 11/28 so the buyer says.
Try the phone it might give you the answers to ease you worries.

I probably should have stated that he said he would send it out by Dec. 7 so I would have it in time for Christmas. But Dec. 7 came and went, and no pin.

Pull his contact info and call. That may give you some answers.
Your reluctance to post a neg is amazing...but hey it's only money.
