From eBay's Announcement Board:
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*** eBay Television and Print Ads ***
Heard the latest buzz about eBay? Beginning on December 27th and running through December 31st, eBay will be airing its FIRST EVER nationwide television ad campaign in conjunction with a simultaneous nationwide newspaper ad campaign. The two television ads will be shown during primetime and late night on shows such as ER, Spin City, Dateline, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire; and during the NFL playoffs next weekend just to name a few. This campaign will be seen by millions of potential new users and will reinforce our position as the world’s marketplace where people trade practically anything on earth!
The ads will demonstrate that eBay is the place for anyone, to find and buy just about anything. The ads, which are humorous in nature, accomplish this by showing buyers products not typically associated with eBay. The overall theme of the ads is structured to entice additional buyers to come to the site by stressing the breadth of product selection and the opportunity to receive a great deal. All eBay categories, however, will benefit from the ads through greater exposure and an increase of buyers coming to the site.
The advertising campaign is just one part of eBay’s aggressive plans to bring more buyers to the site. eBay is also bringing additional traffic through our affiliates program, and our ongoing relationship with AOL and other major Internet partners. More buyers, of course, mean more bidders on the items being offered by our sellers. Sellers should list additional items in the days preceding the ad campaign in order to take advantage of the expected tremendous influx of additional buyers.
eBay is committed to do everything it can to making our users’ experiences, whether they are a buyer or seller, the best experience possible.
Happy Holidays,
eBay

After the Free listing Day to bring listing numbers back up, now thay have found another to bring January listings (and listings fees) back up more quickly than last year.

Cimfra...they are doing a national advertising campaign which has the potential to increase the number of buyers and your finding fault?

I am not complaining about the ad campaign itself. I think it is a great idea and long overdue!
My first post is more like a "Heads up!" type post for everyone who thought of keeping away from listing until later in January.
But my second post is more about the timing. I understand that for eBay's management, this is the time of year that the numbers look very bad and this is a good way to bring numbers back up faster. But as a seller, I think it would have been better to advertise when the site was already filled with items and in need of more bidders, like in September and October.

But this is one of the times of the year that people get new computers...their first one. Perfect time to try and bring in new buyers.
Haven't you ever noticed how many newbies there are right after the first of the year?
