I currently get in the car and go to the post office and pay for postage on every envelope there ~ to this point ~ I only have used priority mail ~ someone told me you have to deliver a priority mail package to a postal worker ~ so how does stamps.com etc fit in with that? Also what other services such as stamps.com are available? What are the advantages and disadvantages?

My mailman picks up outgoing Priority Mail packages at my mailbox when he makes his daily rounds. By regulation, they do not have to pick up any Priority Mail item that exceeds 2 pounds. Also, they won't pick up an item that needs to be insured. Those items need to be brought to the post office. You can still publish your postage with Stamps.Com and affix the labels. By doing that, you save the need to pay for it at the post office counter -- things move a little faster. Because I mail quite a bit through Priority Mail so my postman waives the two pound rule. As you develop a working relationship with these folks, they'll probably do the same if you ask them to.

I use Stamps.com and I drop most of my packages in a slot at the PO or in the mailboxes outside afterhours. (My PO is only a mile away.) Packages too large to fit through the slots are dropped off at a counter during business hours. Unless I need to be sure the DC is scanned or I have an international package, I don't stand in line.

I buy stamps by putting a check in the mailbox in the envelope they provide; stamps are delivered next day. I ship approx. 50 packages/week, and put them in front of the call door, ring the bell, and they come and get them. Easy for them and me.
