Has anyone here ever sold Christmas ornaments on eBay, either vintage or contemporary? I have some I'd like to sell and I noticed the current listings other people have up are doing pretty well.

I'm wondering if just before Christmas is a better time to sell as far as bidding goes, or if there's such a glut of ornaments listed during that time of year that prices would be better at other times.

What are your opinions/experiences?

I've sold vintage ornaments right up to Christmas, but I've sold many in the spring too.

I sold vintage ornaments for the month preceding Christmas up until the last possible time to insure delivery before Christmas.

I was very happy with my bids. I didn't get them all up (I have a lot of them) because I was too lazy. I'm going to watch the prices in the off season, and if they look like they're going I'll put some up.

Speaking as a vintage Christmas ornament BUYER, I look for these all year, and stop looking right before Christmas.

We are recreating the Christmas tree of our childhoods at my house so are looking for very specific ornaments that look precisely like the ones we had on our trees as kids. Guess that makes us vintage, too, heh.

Anyway, the reason I stop right before Christmas are two reasons 1) I won't get them shipped in time to put on the tree and 2) as Christmas approaches there seems to be more buyer competition for some of the "better" ornaments or collections. I found that the most competition came in the October-November timeframe. That's crummy for me as a buyer but good for you as a seller.

I've had several auctions for vintage christmas ornaments and found that they got the most bids in August and September, the lowest bids being in early December.

Do your homework - there's lots of different kinds (figural, mercury glass, etc.)

I have several boxes of old old glass ornaments that I would love to sell, but the thought of shipping them sends shivers down my spine....I suppose the only way to go would be to pack each one with tissue paper, bubble wrap & separate boxes for each....How do those of you who sell/ship them do it?....

Rancher, I have purchased approximately 20 - 30 lots of vintage christmas ornaments mostly in boxed sets of twelve in the past three months. DO NOT go to extemes on shipping that you mentioned, I had one seller do so and my parcel arrived in a box for a 34" television set and it cost approx. the same to ship. It was utterly ridiculous, and she got a nuetral comment from me because I had to pay 4 times normal shipping of the same type of ornaments.

All but one or two of my ornaments arrived in perfect shape and this was during the christmas rush too.

Most sellers just leave the ornaments in the original box, maybe a little tissue around the ornament and then the whole box wrapped with bubble wrap and mailed in a sturdy cardboard box. Easy to do and ships for the 2 lb priority rate.

Hope this helps

I've sold several boxes of old ornaments on ebay. I wrap the original box in bubble wrap and then pack that box into a larger box and then fill it with foam peanuts. I do write fragile on the shipping box in a bold black marker. They all have made it to their destinations just fine, even to Alaska. I bought some from a seller, who left them in the original box, then just put that box into another box with no packing, bubble wrap, etc. They arrived at my house in perfect shape. Weird, because if I am going to hang some on my tree, I drop it once and it is shattered.

Marvey...THANX!....I know when we pack 'em for the annual trip up & down the stairs to the attic (NOT an easy trip as my oldest son has a GREAT future with USPS or UPS!) I wrap 'em in tissue in their original boxes & they survive year after year...Since you've received them, unharmed for the most part, this way, sounds like a good plan....&...best of all, I'll be able to actually move them along to new homes now!....YIPEE!!!

Edited to add a thanx to Truesmom too!...Sounds like they will be able to hit the auction board real soon!

Well good, now I feel more confident about listing them in the off season. The ones I have aren't anything fancy. They're mostly sets of glass balls, some plain and some with decoration, and one big set of blue ones which I forgot to put up on the tree this year because hubby didn't bring them in from the garage. I figure since I didn't miss them this year maybe I can do without them next year... they are pretty, though. OK, maybe I'll keep them and sell some of the others. As if I've had time for eBay lately anyway....
