Has anybody ever used this option for an auction? I never noticed it until tonight when I was relisting my Sony Playstations ~ the 2 I almost lost to a scam artist (see the Paypal ~ I almost lost $850 thread)~ that I also already sold to someone else with the buy it now option who turned around and claimed someone else stole their password and so they were not following through with the auction........So frankly at this point ~ I hate the thought of relisting this auction and I was wondering about requiring the bidders to pre-qualify ~ but on the other hand ~ there are 850 or so auctions up for them now ~ so they are more likely to move on to the next auction instead of dealing with me. What do you guys think?

Define prequalify.

I would move on to the next auction. I would never waste my time just for an opportunity to place a bid on an auction. mho

pre-qualifying a bidder is a JOKE !!!!!!

Ebay should implement a feature that locks out bidders you do not want to bid on your auction (pre-disqualify) not the other way around.

Or I guess you could qualify everyone on ebay and then weed out the deadbeats, but come on, how long would that take ! If it was even possible !

This pre-qualify bidder crap is the stupidest thing I have seen ebay do !

I myself do not want to discreminate against anyone, unless they have proven to me they are a bad egg.

I had a local car dealer want to prequalify me before he would sit and talk price with me . He wanted my job info and everything even though I told him I would not be finacing it.
I went down the road to the next dealer. They were OK but they would not let me pay with my Visa debit card although the had the logo on the door. It was only $5k for a used minivan.

As you noted there are others who will not grill them to go to.

I think that the PreQualify 'feature' is more for Big Ticket items and PROMOTIONAL AUCTIONS to prevent bogus bidding.

Also, items within eBay Premier (formerly called "Great Collections" listings can be safeguarded against bogus bidding in this way... since some of these PREMIER offerings are better publicized, drawing more attention to them (I'm thinking of the recent Pottery from Vietnam) and the need for making sure folks bidding are SERIOUS about their offers to purchase.

HOWEVER, I suppose that eBay could tout the PreQualify 'feature' as something for the average seller in the event an offer to purchase an item comes up AFTER the listing closes unsuccessfully... the seller could agree to a price with the potential bidder, PRE-Qualify them.... list the item with a Buy It Now price and they will have all of the wonderful benefits of trading within the eBay Venue.

Insurance (if applicable - read the fine print)
Feedback - (that cannot be edited once comments have been left)
SafeHarbor Protection (will "investigate" certain situations, check the list for what SafeHarbor will actually investigate)

BUT basically, PreQualify is for Big Ticket items and Special Promotional Auctions. This will elimintae potential bad press on promotional auctions such as what happened with the Good Morning America Tshirt last year....

It can serve as an official way of verifying bidders rather than leaving it up to the Seller (as with the Honus Wagner card where the seller qualified bidders over the telephone and placed bids on their behalf)

It's a good thing... just not something that your AVERAGE seller will benefit from.

All Users wanted was to KEEP OUT a small number of bidders (those we each have had a bad experience with)...A "Block List" would have been so wonderful!

Instead, Ebay came up with this stupid, useless "Pre-qualify" jewel.....To think our FVF goes to paying Ebay's programmers salaries...

Gosh Shosh!

I am afraid I agree with the rest, if you wanted me to prequalify on something like a Playsation2... I would move on to the next one.
Unless you're selling something very high priced I can't see myslef prequalifying.

I agree with Shosh. Pre qualify is the stupidest feature eBay has put out for a while.
Besides the mentioned "Block list", these features would've been MUCH better than pre-qualify:

feedback block: Block bidding from users w/ 0 feedback (or whatever feedback amount you decide)

Country Block: (for the Xenophobic seller) Block bidding from users from Out of your home country.

Just take a money order for payment. When you get the money order, they get the merchandise. No one gets duped.

A "Block List" would be the IDEAL !!!!!!

Just a simple list where I could put all my "bad egg" customers would suffice for me.

I do not want to discriminate against low or zero feedback (everyone was new at some point), but a list to keep people I do not want bidding on my auctions would be soooo wonderful.

As I don't sell High-End items, this feature is USELESS for me...

No doubt, eBay added it to protect THEIR vested interest in those FVF on the HIGH TICKET items...

I'm DEFINATELY for a BLACKLIST for the buyers I DON'T want to do business with again...
