I purchased an item at the wallpockets site that purported to be a wallpocket but really is a greek-looking classical maiden's head with a candle holder in the top. Not bad looking but too stark white. It is "polyresin." Any suggestions on how I can give this an older ecru or tea-stained look? The polyresin doesn't seem to hold any stain (I tried furniture stain, for example). Short of painting it, is there any other way to make it look a little older for my older-looking dining room?

Go to Michael's or MJ Designs. they have various antiquing solutions etc that you can rub on and buff off. You will find it, I think, near the leafing supllies and Fimo and Sculpey.

So much for either Martha or me being indispensable
Gosh, it doesn't hold any solvent-based stain? I'm kind of surprised. If you can't rough up the surface as abacaxi suggests, you might try wiping it down with some "liquid sandpaper" or whatever the solvent is for polyresin, which you should find at the home or auto store right next to the Bondo. Failing that, try spraying it with "workable fixatif" first; that's the stuff you use when you're drawing with pastels and charcoal.
Another option would be to, indeed, paint it with a flat or satin finish, and then stain from there. Krylon makes a spray paint called "Make it Suede!" which gives a "soft, brushed finish" (reading the can) which will then hold stain in places other than just the crevices.

I ain't no Martha Stewart by a long shot, nor do I pretend to be HCQ but how about covering it with wet tea bags? I've accidentally put them on all sorts of surfaces and they have stained the heck out of most of them.

Believe it or not, try shoe polish (the liquid kind, not the wax). It might just work. I use shoe polish on an amazing amount of things and it's very flexible. You probably have some laying around too.
