When browsing through the auctions, I find this pic service: "click on the cigar tube to see pic", to be most annoying because of the extra step and ads, that I then have to close out. But tonight I found something even worse!! Has anyone else found this?? Why do people do this??
Auction for collectible widget I was interested in.......no pics...but link to "our web site to see this item"...now, at this point I already decide I'm not interested but curiosity compels me to look....the web page is filled with grapics and gifs and busy backgrounds, info about her business, and many pics of her daughter, for pete's sake!!......but I still can't find the picture of the widget, it's not there, just more pages to link to !!

Unfreakinbelievable

I refuse to hit a link to look at a picture for an auction. The last time I did, I had a pop up ad opening every 5 minutes for 2 weeks. Annoying as h#%l.

Ya, or the one with the little frying pan & "click here to see pic".

Any auction with that losses any potential bids from me.

If you have a pic, please just post it with your auction. Don't make us wander around.

If it says "click here", for some reason I keep missing and hittin the back button. Don't know how that keeps happening.

My computer seems to convert those "click here to see pic" text to "click your back button and move on". If I'm really, really, interested in the item I'll click to see the pic, but usually the only thing clicked is my 'back' button.

What's wrong with the frying pan ads. I like mine. OK, just kidding. I too go back.

Well how do you feel about a seller that puts additional links of their own to view more pictures?

I've run several ads where I take up to 22 pictures of something I'm trying to auction.
So instead of having the "looker" wait for all 22 photos to load on one page I provide 3-4-5 links to additional pictures and thanks to the great hints from here each link opens a NEW window.

No advertising and no waiting......just more pics of what I'm trying to sell.

So is that also a "TURN OFF" for you?

Your links would be fine. I have seen the pic and if I'm interested, of course I want to see more. But if I have to jump through hoops, just to see if I'm interested or not....forget it. And I trust you don't bury those 22 additional pics under pages devoted to blinking gifs, the family pets, etc.

What frying pan..........I don't see a frying pan, only an elongated cigar tube.

packer, I think you've got exactly the right idea. I can't tell you how many auctions I've <backed> out of because I wasn't about to sit and wait for 22 images to load.

I suspect the purpose of the pic service requiring you to click on the "cigar" icon is so they can show you a banner ad above the photo, but jeez, why would any seller continue to use these services when so many alternatives are now available? Can anybody 'splain this to me?

packer: With that many pictures, you have the right idea (if you just stick to pics of the item at hand, as others already said), except for opening a new window for each pic. New windows eat up more resources and can slow the computer down, and force people to close lots of windows rather than simply using the Back button, defeating "natural" web browsing. If someone really wants to see the item in a new window, there is always the right-click "Open in New Window" option.

Sorry, this happens to be one of my biggest pet peeves about the Web.

As to the rest of the topic, the "click here to see pic" tactic is almost always about advertising, either the seller's own advertising or the seller's hosting site's advertising (typically the latter). Usually it takes a very annoying form, such as blinking GIFs, a lot of clutter, or tracking you. Sometimes, such as at Andale, you even need to have JavaScript turned on to see the larger image (they at least provide a smaller version of the image, on the auction page itself, though).

If I can't see even a single image of the item without going somewhere else or turning on active content, I usually just hit "back" (I like gjsi's way of putting it). I realize free services have to make their money somewhere, but how much is it to rent 5M more at a "real" ISP? If some people are not bothering clicking to see the image, is that much being lost a month?

What's being done in the name of direct marketing nowadays is crazy.
The above are all just my opinions, except where I cite facts as such.
Oh, I am not dc9a320 anywhere except AW. Any others are not me.
Is eBay is changing from a world bazaar into a bizarre world?

Morning All,

dc9,
I always put an interesting picture on the auction page besides the links.
After they read the description and see a sample picture nad they are interested and want to see "MORE" then they can go ahead and see what else there is. However, I didn't know that it could be a burden for some to open additional windows. I think the advantage to the additional windows is they are loaded and there, if they wish to look at them again or to compare to another group all they have to do is click on the window and not have to wait for it to load again.
I use my Internet provider to host my pictures, so there is never any annoying advertisements to have to wait to load.

I don't run these type of auctions very often, only when I'm selling like say a box lot or big groups of something.

And yes, there is nothing more annoying then to get into an auction and have to wait for dozens of pictures to load on the main page.

One thing I don't like about the "cigar" & "frying pan" icons to see the pics is it can take alot of extra time to load those pictures & ads and once the auction is over and I mean within seconds of it ending the picture is no longer available.

Do people pay for those picture hosting services?

Actually, reloading a recently loaded page and its images is usually very brief. I find reclicking links to be faster than tabbing around (and eventually having to close) a bunch of additional windows, and I guess if I really want to see several images at once, I save them to my hard drive and use a good image viewer, which with multiple images, is also faster than a lot of tabbing. New window commands are not easy to block, but "Open in a New Window" is fairly easy to do, assuming one knows about the right-click however.

At least those are my opinions. As I said, the "new windows" thing is a "pet peeve," so I don't know how many other people share the same feeling, so I'm sorry if I came on too strongly on this issue. The rest of what you said sounds great, and definitely better than putting all 22 full-sized images right on the main auction page! Even multiple new windows is better than 22 full-sized images on one page!

"Do people pay for those picture hosting services?" Well, I was assuming that many dedicated picture-hosting services are "free," making their money off ads. I'm not a seller, so I don't really know much about what was available, other than my drawing a comparison between "free" services that do their thing in certain ways vs. paying for a little more space on one's own ISP.

dc9,
I don't have that option on my right click.

I learned from here about a year ago that Ctrl N will open a new window, but mine opens to the start up page. It was the best discovery to date about how to open a new window. I never new how to do it.
Now when I start-up my puter I have 3 windows open at all times 1- is My eBay, 1- is AW (EBO) and 1- is for my local TV guide these are the 3 things I use the most throughout the day and go back to alot. I HATE having to use the back button to search and reload.

Its nothing for me to have 7 or 8 windows open at all times.

I have a dinosaur for a computer and have never noticed added stress with the additional windows.
