Hi!
I've been in the market to buy a DIGITAL camera...I've been researching it all week long..based on the advise I've read over the months.

If it weren't for you all sharing your knowledge and tips I'm sure I would have given away $500+ I'm willing to spend.

What do I mean? Well..before I didn't care to much if someone was new to selling. Before I wouldn't have been too suspicious to see a Seller and Buyer BOTH with 0 feedback(and wonder if it isn't the seller under another name)...

I would have been on one camera...but in my research I saw that this particular ad was COPIED from someone elses...all of it..and this particular seller was new...before the week was out this new seller had been NARU'd.

I currently have a bid (higher than a LOT of the others because the seller has a solid feedback base).....

Normally I make a decision, don't research..nope just plunge right in...would have looked for a BUY IT NOW...and not much else and would have gotten taken.

But since you all had mentioned that this particular area has a LOT of fraud I was very cautious.

Still don't have a camera (I'm going for a Kodak 290)...my bid I placed is only $15 than the current bid and 3 days left on auction..so I might not get this one...but I'm L@@KING.

A big $$$ purchase like a digital camera, IMHO belongs at the retail level. I bought mine at Staples - they have an excellent return policy, so I tend to buy alot of electronic items there.

BEWARE of Circuit City's return policy. They charge a restocking fee.

Not that I return alot of items BUT I like to know I can if it is necessary.

I have a Sonya Mavica. Love it!

The main feature I want is the 'burst'..so I can take pics of my grandkids as well as for ebay.

Does the Olympus have that?

Thanks
Carole

Unfortunately there aren't any stores here except Best Buy and Circuit City..didn't like the selection from either one.

Hmmm...wonder if there is a staples in the city about 2 hours from here?

I have the same camera as tonimar and like it very much. I'm just planning on eventually getting into a professional Olympus model. Overall, any Olympus is a nice camera.

I'm not sure what you mean by "burst". Do you plan on blowing up the grandkids?

Now kids, smile and say cheese while I leave the room.

Burst..LOL...blowing up my grandkids!...is the ability to take 'action' or 'consecutive' shots without the normal 'delay' experienced in other digital cameras.

Does the Olympus have this annoying pause?

Maybe I'll look into that one since I've now been OUTBID for the 290...

You might like a POLAROID PDC640.
The package price for these are less than $200.00. It is easy to use and has the styling of a more expensive camera. The picture quality is very good, the software is easy to use, and the tech support is readily available. The only bad thing IMO is that it eats batteries. It comes with an AC adapter so batteries are not the only option. The best reviews I have found are at Amazon.com. Individual sellers post their ratings and opinions. Good luck finding a good camera at a good price.

I have a Sony Mavica FD73. The advantage is that I don't have to have a memory card to plug into my computer. I use a floppy disk, take the picture and then use the floppy to upload. Simple.

I got my camera at a local Pawn Shop. I got the camera, 2 lenses, charger, extra batterie and a carring case for $325! It was a really good deal.

I had 7 days to try the camera and return it for a full refund if I wasn't happy. That was plenty of time for me to go nuts with it! It works great! All of it.

Check your local Pawn Shops for some of these big ticket items. You may be surprised at what you can find there!

I purchased 3 dig cams on ebay. The last of which is my Sony Mavica FD90 which I LOVE! Some things to look for besides, of course, the seller reputation are:
*Make sure it's new, factory sealed in box!
*Make sure warranty is provided
*Check closed auctions to see what they have been going for.

I had nothing but the best of luck on the purchases I have made online for electronics and the only difference from going to my local store was that I saved a lot of money.

But then I am super careful from whom I will buy. It doesn't hurt to be neurotic, I always say.

And the cool thing was that as I kept buying cameras and finding out that I needed a different one, I sold each one on ebay for a profit!

imlds2....Congrats on your learnin' how to make an educated (read: safe) purchase!...I'm a dive in, get it now kinda person, so I know how hard it can be to play it nice & safe & cautious (read: painful!)....

How about tryin' Staples.com?....They should have the same selections as the stores & a secure method for purchasing or returning a camera...

A good place to read reviews on all types on digital cameras is eopinions.com and I highly recommend this site to read the good, bad and the ugly on what others like or dislike about a specific camera. Remember though that a lot of these users are computer geeks and know much more than the average person on electronics and therefore expect a lot more from these cameras that you or I would.

I used eopinions.com in November when I was Christmas shopping for an inexpensive digital for our 15-year-old daughter. We also learned about shortcuts, pointers, etc., for camea usage while using this site.

I decided upon and found the Polaroid PDC640 at egghead.com for $129 because you get more bang for your buck than other comparable digital cameras. Our daughter seems pleased with her camera, but has not used all its features yet because she's been so busy during holiday break from school.

It is nice to hear someone researching before bidding. eBay should have a good enough tutorial to do the same there but they would have to admit some negative conditions exist.

I bought my Mavica using one of the search engines that pull up all the retailers offering the item and sort them by price or other factors. I sorted by price but did not buy the cheapest. I bought the cheapest who had it in stock / had reasonable shipping / and had a good return policy. It was still about $15/$20 cheaper than the bids were ending on eBay at that time.

If there is a Staples that close they may offer delivery to your area. Their truck may only go your way once a week or so, but you could look up the web site and ask if they will deliver your direction.

THANK YOU ALL SOOOOO MUCH!

AFter taking all your suggestions into consideration I changed my purchase to an Olympus 460Z! I got it for $365...have already paid for it and it will be shipped 2 day service!

I'm really EXCITED about this...boy did I have a headache after researching...my computer is sloooooowwww...(hooks up at 31,200...nothing higher available in my area)..so I must have researched over 5 hours about this purchase.

Reason I bought 460Z is that it allows close ups to 8"...(macro)...has repeat pictures(burst) like a normal camera...and I liked the rest of the features.

Can't wait for my new toy!

Carole
