So PLEASE anyone who got one of these emails who did NOT register the ID between April and November 2000 - post here - so that we can tell just how much truth there is in this latest Pursglove softshoe. Q - the problem occurred with six million users who registered between April and November of last year. - EQ

It's a LIE! At best a half-truth, because they only reset the marketing preferences back to YES ... leaving the others the way they were! They reset what they had to to claim permission to spam, telemarket and jumk mail those users.
1. I registered an acount in April of 2000
2. the instant I got the password, I set the preferences to NO on a lot of things, including all the marketing crap and the auction-related notices. All I wanted for that account was the EOA mails IF the bid was a winner.
3. I saved a copy of the preferences after they supposedly reset them to bring this account in line with the rest of the eBay community ... THE ONLY ONES THEY RESET WERE FOR ADS! Email promotions, telemarketing, and junk mail were set to YES. the rest of the settings were the way I had left them.
Others have noticed this too ... someone commented on the DNF board that it was suspicious that the only changes were those that allowed eBay to spam.

I registered in 1998. I just now received one of these messages from eBay Announcements: "Exciting News for Toys and Hobbies!"
This is included in the message:
"eBay sent this e-mail to you because your Notification Preferences indicate that you want to receive information about Special Promotions, Offers and Events. You are subscribed as (my email address). See below for instructions on how to unsubscribe."
There is a clickable link on the bottom of the email to check your Notification Preferences. I followed the link and looked at my preferences. All of my preferences are set exactly as I set them low those many years ago, including NO checked off next Special Promotions, Offers and Events.
I wonder how eBay proposes that I unsubscribe when I never subscribed in the first place. Looks like a monumental programming screw up at eBay. Lord, I hope I don't start getting Daily Status Reports too...

Just went and checked - my options were changed at least on SOME functions - on EVERY single one of my ebaY IDs - all but one registered prior to 2000.
The ones that were changed from NO to YES on ALL the IDs were EOA, Watch List, Daily Status, and Outbid notices. Three IDs had all the setting changed to YES. A little more of the old KP softshoe.

I did NOT receive the email, yet my preferences were reset to YES for spam and telemarketing on one of my IDs (registered in October 1999).
The other, registered in May of 1998, wasn't touched. At least not so far.

Well, did you expect eBay to manage to reset JUST the ones they said they reset?
that would imply competence

Both my bidder's ID and my seller's ID had yes for marketing.
I have been a member since early 1998.
I always put no for anything like that.

I've also been a member since Jan. 2000 and mine have been reset too.
I first noticed the change a few months when I started getting daily status notices on auctions where I held the bid.

I have 5 eBay user ID's, all registered in 1996. One has powerseller status, one is used for buying, and the other three have never been used. All had the same preference settings to not receive anything from eBay except listing confirmations, end of auction notices, bid confirmationss, outbid notices, and policy changes. These were all checked and reset the last time that eBay did this.
All 5 accounts have been changed by eBay to receive their SPAM, and I never received an email from eBay regarding changes to any of these accounts.
It appears that eBay really wants to sell (or has already) it's members info to the spamsters. I have been receiving so much spam recently that I may have to change my email addresses. I get spam on the three eBay accounts that I have never used. These accounts have never had the email used to send or receive email. Now, how do you suppose these spamsters got the email addresses? Only one place comes to mind that has them, eBay.

I wondered about the recent amount of spam I started to receive in the last month or so too.
I haven't done anything differently, but I went from receiving almost no spam to about 20-30 a day.
I thought maybe my internet provider did something different but he swears he didn't.

This is infuriating! My main ID, which has been in use since February 1998, had been reset! Not only had I somehow "agreed" to get spam email, but also to take telemarketing calls and direct mail! I would NEVER have clicked yes on those boxes! I was wondering why all of a sudden I was getting eBay's spam! Nice going, eBay.

I registered with eBay on April 13, 1999.
The first indication that I had that my preferences had been reset was when I started receiving "Outbid Notices" when I had specified not to. This lasted for about one week then stopped just as magically as it had started. About one week after that I received a promotional email from ebay, which said that I was receiving the email because I had specified that I wanted to in my preferences.
I received the promotional email on December 28, 2000.
Here is a copy of my complaint:
Why am I receiving this?
I have never agreed to receive promotional emails from eBay. There appears to
be a series of recent problems with your databases. I was also receiving
"Outbid Notices" even though I had specified that I did not wish to receive
them. This lasted for a few days and then stopped. I have made no changes to
any of my preferences in the past month.
How long will these problems persist?
The response I received on January 2, 2001, after complaining to eBay was:
Hello Patrick,
I really apologize that you received an email you would not like to have
received. There aren't any known problems with our database.
I went ahead and resubmitted your preferences as "no". There may have
been an error as you suggested that didn't match your actual preferences
with what was showing up on your preferences page.
In the future if you would like to change your preferences for receiving
notices about special offers, promotions, and other such notices please
change your "Notification Preferences". To do this, first go to this
web page and login:
http://pages.ebay.com/services/myebay/optin-login.html
You can then change your preferences to suit your needs. Please
remember that although your preferences are updated immediately, the
mailing lists may have already been pulled for certain promotions and
mailings.
You may receive emails that aren't indicated on your notification
preferences as some mailing lists are pulled 4-6 weeks before the actual
mailing occurs.
Again, I'm sorry for any frustration this may have caused.
Apparently they are now aware of problems with their databases which they weren't aware of earlier...

I have, and always have had, only one account with Ebay which I registered around the middle of 1997.
I just checked my preferences, (really didn't know this screen existed), and "telemarketing", "direct mail" and "auction watch reminder" were all checked Yes.
I never received any type of notification that I needed to select these preferences, (they were initiated long after I registered and I really wasn't interested in any of them).
However, I didn't realize that Ebay had simply made the choice for me since I didn't state a preference, (I never go to that screen - my mistake in more ways than one).
Edited to say: Not Jada anywhere but AW.
