I believe I need to clarify my EOA notices. I just had two episodes, back to back for the first time. How would you handle it?
I just received a money order in the mail. It's someone instate and requiring state sales tax. It's not for a large amount, but it's something I am contemplating eating. My auction & end of auction notification states that instate residents must pay this tax. It's possible the fella could have overlooked this.
Secondly, a newbie, a Canadian won an auction. I did not know she was a Canadian. It appears the shipping will run a little higher. I usually give choices of USPS shipping. On my auction, I have noted "Canadians, please request for shipping to Canada", but it is nowhere stated on my end of auction notification. Therefore, a money order is enroute and she requested first-class shipping. Sigh.
Here is my eBud winner notification notice. Tell me if I can clear this up so I won't have to do this again. (Been doing eBay for less than a year - new to eBud).
"Hello,
Congratulations on your successful bid on eBay Item # <ITEM#>!
Your bid $<BID> plus shipping (your choice):
A) +Priority $3.50 = $XX.XX due
B) +First-Class $2.00 = $XX.XX due
C) +Book Rate $1.50 = $XX.XX due
NOTE: California residents must add 7.5% sales tax to the item(s) ~ shipping is not taxable. Insurance is an additional $1.10.
Please reply to this email with your shipping address so that I will have the item ready to go upon receipt of payment. I cut & paste this information onto my auction managing program and prepare your label accordingly.
When remitting payment, please write the Item # <ITEM#> on your check or money order and refer to it in all email. If possible, please print out this email and include it with payment. I also accept PayPal & BillPoint.
Confirmations are due 3 days after auction end (1/XX/01) and payment is due within 10 days after auction close (1/XX/01).

When you do your EOA put your Tax or any pertinent information in bold or color. That will draw their attention to it. Or at the end of your EOA you could say. If you live in California please add 7.5% tax. Or item will not be mailed if you have forgotten to add your tax. I think color or bold will help alot. On the Canadian or foreign buyers I state. U.S.Buyers pay S/H of
and then in bold I put <B>International buyers please email me before bidding</B> hoping that they will so I will be able to calculate the postage if they win the bid.

IF you know they are in CA, DO NOT LEAVE IT UP TO THEM TO CALCULATE THE SALES TAX!
Do it for them, edit the letter, and give them the TOTAL including tax. Many people see the word TOTAL and write the check ... I know I do it.
For the non-USA ... my EOA clearly states (for flat-rate stuff) that the shipping is valid only for addresses containing a USA ZIP CODE (which nicely covers APO and Guam) and that if the USPS does not deliver to your shipping address you have to contact me and I'll calculate the cost.

Do you know what reading email in HTML looks like when the recipient only has text-based? It's not easy.

I'd move the blurb about sales tax to a line of its own BEFORE the shipping info. My EOA gives the shipping rate options, then states "This shipping quote is valid only for U.S. addresses. If you require shipping outside the U.S., please contact us with your shipping address so that we may provide you with an appropriate shipping quote. "

Great suggestions! I think I'll implement these changes. Thanks a bunch. I'll eat it this time around, but no more!!
