I have never signed up for Paypal and do not want to. I only accept check and money orders. I sold an item for $50.00 on Jan. 2nd and received an email from the buyer saying he would mail a check Jan. 4th. Had heard no more until yesterday when I received an email from paypal saying the customer had paid me $50.00. I went to the paypal site but found that I was going to have to sign up for paypal in order to get the money. I emailed the buyer & said please send money order or check. Have heard nothing since.
What would you do? Sign up for paypal? Leave buyer negative feedback? or what.

First, don't let anyone pressure you into anything you dont want to do. As for joining Paypal, it all depends on how afraid you are of them. The biggest problem with them is frozen accounts and chargebacks. You can reduce this by accepting non credit card payments only. These can only be charged back by making a complaint to Paypal (unlike CC payments where the buyer can contact his credit card company). When the complaint is made to the credit card company, PP is under pressure to get their money back, so they might freeze the account. When the complaint is made to PP, they are not so pressured so they might contact you and give you the chance to reply. For more details, you can read the info I gathered at http://www.ygoodman.com/payments.html

In the beginning of my selling career on Ebay I did not want to take pay-pal because I was afraid of it. But I wanted to make money so I decided to sign up for the service. It doubled my sales overnight! I still don't like having to give a percentage of my sales over to paypal, (which is small but it adds up!) but in the long run I make more sales and thats why I am on Ebay...to sell. It is very easy to sign up for paypal. I also notice a trend among my customers wanting to pay with Bidpay. Bidpay is great because it is Western Union money orders. Bidpays mails a check to you for the amount of the purchase. I usually get the check within a few days, then I ship the merchandise. I have only had a few transactions like this and I don't believe the seller has to pay anything. I now educate all my customers in my winning bid notices that they can send money orders Western Union through Bidpay and Ihave had three people join. In fact, I won't accept a money order unless it is sent through Bidpay because the transactions that I have the most problems with are money orders. If they are lost or stolen in the mail, they think you kept it and tricked them. I like having PROOF on every transaction, especially with the fraud mania that has swept through peoples minds about the auction business.

Thank you for your replies. I have decided not to sign up for Paypal no matter what. I sell items on ebay, describe them accurately, and ship them promptly when I receive the money. It just goes against the grain with me to have to jump through hoops in order to get paid. Who knows? I may be earning my first negative feedback.
