fedex offers ground to mexico, but last time i tried to do ground international at the service center they told me i had to have an account ;p

Thanks Julsey, that suggestion was a lifesaver.
I'm still learning the new categories and available options but I don't feel bad I missed this as it was not offered as an option when I discussed this problem at the PO today.
Between the high UPS rates and the no insurance on the basic USPS options I felt in a box.

It's no accident that there is limited insurance to Mexico. It's no accident that truly responsible carriers charge so much.
The problem is that packages are stolen in the mail.

You might want to look into a courier service like DHL or Urgente Express...they have reasonable rates--I've used them extensively. The catch is the receiver has to have one of their customer counters nearby...
