I'm getting ready to leap into auctioning more seriously and would also like to have my own website to sell duplicate widgets at a higher price than what they would fetch at auction. I have already reserved a domain name but I'm shopping for a web hosting service and was looking for some recommendations.... I really am not interested in free sites as I really do want it to be www.mydomainname.com
I don't know why it doesn't work - if you type in www.web2010.com it goes to the correct website - any help out there?

I use http://www.iimp.net/ and have been very happy with them. They charge 75 dollars per quarter and that is for 400MB of server space with 12,000 gigs of bandwith per month allowed. Another good site to evaluate web site hosting and other services is http://www.bizbuyer.com/. They let you tell them what you want and bids are submitted from different companies for you to compare and contrast. Hope that helps!
Edited to add: n/m....I just checked bizbuyer and it says the site is closed until further notice. Just great! *shakes head* . And it was a really good resource too!

You can still use your own domain name with some free webhosts. I just bought a domain name & I'm using freeservers.com as a host. I don't have a ton of money to spend, and thought that would be a better alternative than using a free website (with a hard to remember URL) like I had been doing.

debbielennon beat me to it...I also own a domain name and host it on a free site (freeservers.com)...when people type in my domain name, they are taken to my site at freeservers. you can't tell it's a free site at all from the domain name. I liked this company because you can get the site for free with banner ads, OR pay a few dollars a month (i believe it's $5, but I could be wrong) and have the ads completely removed. works great for me!!

Thanx to all the posters here...I too have just registered a domain name & was looking for a hosting site...Checked all those listed out, & would really love some more info on the freeservers.com site...
debbielennon & brighid868 can I ask you a couple of questions???....
Do you sell anything directly on your sites?...if so how do you do it?...My understanding (oh, and it's sooo limited) is that you need a shopping cart & a merchant account to use CCs....Can freeservers.com provide that?....I'm thinkin' of listing merchandize, having potential customers email for an invoice & then using Billpoint (since I'm already a Billpoint user)...I realize that it's not as slick as an "onsite" cart, but I've got a very limited budget to set this up & looking to save where I can...
Any help / advice you can offer will be greatly appreciated!

I registered my domain name with domaindirect.com, you get redirect to whatever site you use for host and only your domain name shows.
I use 321website.com for my website. They are free and provide free shopping cart and other neat tools. There are banners, but everyone is used to seeing banners......

Hi Rancher:
I have a site on a different free site now. I am waiting for my domain transfer to freeservers to go through. I use my site to describe my items in more detail & show pictures of typical items, colors, etc. I have an email link for people to inquire or special order. The items on my site are done by hand, so I pretty much list 'em as soon as I finish 'em or I take special orders.
Freeservers does not appear to have a shopping cart option, but I saw some info on using a form emailer. You might be able to configure that into an order form, but I think you'd still have to send an invoice.
Someone here has previously mentioned freemerchant.com as a free site with a shopping cart, but I don't know if that would work with your own domain...

What about domain name registration? I've seen a wide range of prices for this... how about some recommendations on sites for initially registering a domain name?

I spent my first year on the net trying different free sites. Some of them were disasters from the start. Some of them started out okay and then started posting their own banners and annoying pop up ads on top of mine. Some had frequent outages. Even when they worked, how professional do you look with a free web site? Then a consultant that I know for years, who sets up corporate websites, told me he was also setting up small websites. I started with him in July and wish I had done it sooner. For $10 a month, he got me the domain name, a 50 megabyte website with unlimited email IDs and no ads. I am in full control. His support was great and he even helped me with the Javascript and mail forms I put up. I gave him a plug on my web site and since then he has set up several other folks who all emailed to thank me for referring him. He is also available to design the site if you need that. For more info, you can email me.

rancher, I'm sorry, I don't use a shopping cart, I just have people email me (or at least I plan to. I've been slow about publicizing it yet so there have been no sales as of this time).
I have found a place you can register domain names for 10 dollars: www.registerclub.com. They will spam you mildly after you use it so be prepared to delete.
many places are offering it for 15 to 20 dollars (per year). Do not pay the full price with places like register.com which I think was 35 a year. search on cheap domain registration and get some sites to check out.
