Hello, all!

I am (admittedly) ignorant of many computer programs and services, so I apologize in advance for the lack of sophistication of my question.

I grow VERY weary of twitching, spinning, making-things-much-slower-to-load advertisements that appear on websites.

How do I make them go away, or do I have to endure an ever-increasing number of flashy "click here" banners?

Any assistance would be helpful. I find them quite distracting, and makes my computer run more slowly than it needs to.

Thanks so very much for your information.

---SkorpioGal (whose eyes are getting bleary from all the spinning gifs!)

There is a program called AdSubtract, which will do the trick. Lemme see if I can dig up the URL.

My bad...that is the URL:

http://www.adsubtract.com

SkorpioGal,

I use AdSubtract and never see any banners or ads.

A quick fix is to hit the escape key when the page is loading. It stops the animated gifs cold.

SkorpioGal:

If you don't want to download a program like AdSubtract and don't want to constantly searching for the ESC key, you can turn off animations in your browser.

In Internet Explorer: Tools/Internet Options, click on Advanced. Scroll down to Multimedia and uncheck the box that says "Play Animations."

I don't know how to do this in Netscape. I have version 4.5 and that came out before animated gifs were hugely popular.

I installed AdSubtract a couple of weeks ago on my cable modem system. It changed my computer's network settings and when I removed it, I couldn't log on to the Internet. I had to call ATT @Home support and reconfigure my network settings. I don't recommend AdSubtract.

I run i.e. 5.5 & sometimes Netscape 6 with a dial up modem, use a firewall and AdSubtract has worked great for me.

All the info about changing the proxy settings is available at their site.

I run AdSubtract on my portable system. I love it. I've not had a problem with it and our cable internet and home network.
