Anybody have any suggestions on photographing black clothes, everytime I do it, you can't see any detail, it looks like a black blob.

Several things can help:
1. If the camera permits, set it to take BRIGHTER pictures.
2. Focus on a neutral GREY object, then switch to the black thing.
3. MORE LIGHT!
4. After you take the picture, use your graphics editing program to adjust the GAMMA (not brightness and contrast ... GAMMA can correct the mid-tones and pull the details out of the blob).

On items where fabric detail is important, or other detail is not showing up because of the black color, I will post two pictures; one of the "true" color, and one lightened to show detail, and make sure to mention ON THE PHOTO ITSELF if possible that the photo is lightened to show detail and that the item is NOT faded. This is especially helpful with black velvet IME.
