I just received payment from a bidder that I thought was in the states. Turns out he's in Canada, wanting to send to a relative in MN.. No big deal there, but he had the brilliance to send payment with a Canadian postal money order in Canadian $$ . I told him I'd have to have payment in U.S. funds to complete the transaction. I said I'd send back his MO. Can he take this back to the PO there, filled out as it is to me, and get a refund?? What needs to be done?

He most likely has the receipt that shows that he the purchaser of the money order and can get a refund or use it towards the purchase of a US $ money order.

Yes, show your PO first before you stick it in the envelope to send it back.
If it is one of those pinkish orange money orders, they will cash it for free. (Yes, they have to, even if they say no. )
You say Canadian dollars though, not sure if that will be a hold up.

I have received a total of 3 US postal money orders this month from US buyers. While I appreciate the prompt payment, I clearly state in my winning bid message that I do NOT accept US postal money orders as we cannot cash them here.
Bidders who don't comply with the sellers terms of service make it bad for all concerned.
(We can cash US post International Money orders but not the regular ones that clearly say on the front of the money order: Redeemable in the United States and Possessions Only.) Canada is not a US possession as yet - at least it wasn't the last time I checked.
I think this is a growing problem for both sides of the story - one that causes sellers a lot of grief as it makes for a lot of extra leg work - not to mention lost sales and high levels of frustration.

ALL Canadian Postal Money orders are the same colour---they just come in different currencies.
One for Canadian Currency will look exactly the same as one in US Currency---but it will say US funds or dollars on it if it is in US$

It says US $ in really small letters. So the USPO will cash this??

Yes, they will. Some argue with you because they have never had to do it before, but there is some list they can look on to see they have to cash it free, no charges to you

You might want to look closely at the Canadian Postal MO. The currency is given immediately to the left of the amount.
It will say 'US$' if it is in US funds. If it says that your post office will cash it free of charge.
Zazzie has already explained that all Canadian MO use the same form. They are the same color for all international currencies including Canadian $, British Pounds, Australian $ etc....
You have to look at the currency code which is well hidden to the left of the amount (and outside of the little box where the amount is typed)
If it says CD$ or CDN$ or similar, it is Canadian Funds and probably not very useful to you.
