I just had a buyer email and ask what the reserve is on one of my auctions. There are no bids on the auction yet. Should I let him know early what my reserve is or not?

If it helps sell the item, then go for it. Or he could be price checking. Just use your judgement to see if he is really interested in the item.

Many sellers will openly share their reserve, if emailed by a potential bidder, emailing back saying something like:
Hi there.
Thank you for your interest in my auction. The (extremely low) and reasonable reserve which I have placed on the item which interests you is $____. (Whadda steal, heY?!)
Thank you for contacting me with your query, and feel free to ask if you have further questions about this exquisitely lovely piece of merchandise.
