I have this round \"box\" made from wood and there is a face carved on the lid of the box. It is about the size of my palm and about 4\" high. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this thingee. I found it at a garage sale so I have no history on it. Thanks
I hope these pictures show up!!

It's a "sun face" on some kind of a basket or box.
Looks like a fertility syumbol for me, or a place to stash some anti-fertility devices on the nightstand.

African, or of African background. Beyond that, I have no idea. My mom worked in Tanzania for several years and this piece is highly reminiscent of the handcrafts there.

I don't know what it is, but my 16 year old son said it was "awesome".

Any idea how to narrow down an internet search for info? I guess I will start looking up african art.
Also, any ideas for catergories?

send a picture of the weaving on it... Does it look well made? (tightly and evenly weaved?) What type of wood do you think it is made of? It looks like it has a patina finish on the wood (aged and not the true color of the wood)..
Is the wood light in weight or does seems to be heavy for the size?
Finding out what type of wood it and what type reed or grass it was weaved out of would be where I would start.
To me it looks old... and really unique!
Added comments;
I keep looking at it... and I think it is very well made, not something that was made in large quanities and then imported to the USA.
Does it have any initials on it?
Does the wood have a natural dark purple shade to it?
