I mailed a book yesterday at book rate (under a pound) and it was $1.85. I used to pay $1.13. I'm not sure if the clerk made a mistake, but am curious if the book/media rate went up that high. Sheesh!!

It should be $1.30 for media mail. I think the clerk charged you for first class.

Make sure you write Book Rate near the spot for postage. And point it out to the clerk.

All of my labels have the type of service requested in bold letters. I do this for me as much as the clerks.
I use book rate a lot, but charge my bidders a flat rate to ship to lessen the bite when something is more than I estimate.

Is $7.00 US too much to mail a single paperpack book from the USA to Canada via USPS air mail? This is what I was quoted after winning an auction and I almost fell off my chair. IF this is legit, I can see a whole bunch of international booksellers losing business ...

RB - The USPS rates to Canada have increased, particularly the Surface Rates which have more or less doubled. "Small Packet" has been renamed to "Global Priority Letter Post". You should acquaint yourself with the International Rate Calculator at http://ircalc.usps.gov/. Click on Package, then choose Canada from the dropdown list of countries and enter the weight. All your available postage options will show up. Some rates are as follows (to Canada):
1 lb - Airmail $3.75; Surface $2.70
24 oz - Airmail $5.05; Surface $4.55
2 lbs - Airmail $6.35; Surface $5.60
36 oz - Airmail $7.00; Surface $6.00

RB,
I suspect that your seller is quoting you the Global Priority Mail rate which is $7 for the large flat rate envelope.
In my opinion, that is too much to pay, unless you really need it within a week.
The seller could ship it for $2.70 Surface if it's less than a lb. The rates go up from there every 1/4 lb. Up to 2 lbs. goes up to $5.60.
In the auction does the seller quote only Priority Mail for domestic shipments or also Book Rate/Media Mail? If only Priority Mail is listed, then it's possible this seller exclusively uses the free Priority Mail materials from the post office and doesn't have any other mailing materials on hand. To go Surface it cannot be mailed using the free materials.
But if there is another cheaper shipping option quoted, then the seller does have other shipping materials on hand and could quite easily send it Surface.
It might be worth asking.

BJ - the listing said nothing about shipping costs. I should have checked first! I have never paid more than a couple of bucks to have a pocket book air mailed to me and I was a bit put off with this quote.
Legit or not, $7.00 US works out to over $10.00 Canadian. I can buy the book, brand new In Canada for less ...
Thanks to all for the numbers. Looks like my on line book buying will have to end
