I listed a Jordan playboy car ad on an auction I sell a lot of stuff but not advertising so this is a first try. I scanned it, it is still in the 1920 magazine, someone emailed me and asked if the item was still in the magazine, which I thought was a great idea because there are also lots of other great old advertising in the magazine. Is this wrong to do. Should I of removed the ad and matted it or framed it. I just did not want to take the chance of tearing it.
I hope some one will tell me how to sell old magazine advertising
Thank you

As an often collector and sometime seller, I prefer the magazine to be intact. If you plan on cutting and matting the advertising remove as much of the page as possible. Lay the page on a flat surface and using a stright edge trim the picture. Craft shops sell a beginners matting kit that will contain all the tools and instructions that you need.

Sammack,

If you're looking to make serious money from your older magazines, by all means remove the ad! You'll make MUCH more money selling the magazine in pieces than if you sold it by itself (with some rare exceptions of highly collectible magazines). But, don't take the time to matt and frame the advertisements. Most collectors are going to want to do that themselves. The matt and frame you pick for the ad probably wouldn't go with their decour, or wouldn't be their style, etc..
To remove the ads from magazines, invest in a good sharp razor blade (exacto knifes work great!) and a metal straight edge (like a metal yardstick). Use the straight edge to guide the ruler. Make several light passes with the razor blade (never try to remove it in one swipe!). And thats all there is to it!
Also, make sure that you are careful with the shipping of the ads. You'll want to put each one in a plastic sleeve (to protect from moisture) and then ship them in a cardboard stay-flat mailer. I hope this all helps! Good luck with your auctions!
