I've had my Sony Mavica FD7 for almost three years and it has been trouble free all this time. I used it Wednesday and it was fine. I put it away in its case in the drawer where I always keep it and when I went to use it yesterday it was completely dead! I took it to my local camera store and they confirmed the batteries were both good but they don't work on digital cameras so they gave me the number for the nearest Sony repair place - 30 miles away. I'm taking it there this morning but just in case it's something really easy and simple that I haven't thought of, I thought I'd ask you knowledgeable people here before I tackle the SoCal freeways on a Friday.
Anybody have any ideas what might have happened to it???

I have no idea what might be the matter, but you might try asking their Support:
1-888-449-7669
I hope this number is still good...haven't used it since '99. Good luck!

Thanks, Toke. Your number is still good and I got through very quickly to a very nice technician. Unfortunately, he says it sounds like an "internal problem" (read, "expensive" so I'm off to the authorized repair place down the coast...

Sorry, Mary...hope it's not too much...
When you find the trouble, will you post it? Mine will be 3 this fall. I'd like to know what I might be in for. It's always a dilemma with these things...fix 'em or buy a new one.

I remember reading that Sony does a flat rate repair on the cameras. The charge the same no matter if it is a switch or a whole new floppy drive. So you at least know it will be reasonable in relation to the cost of the camera.
I would also look carefully in the battery well and see that the two contactors that project into the battery are not damaged. If they are check the same posts in the recharger.
The battery could be good but if one of those posts is bent over it will not make contact.

Have a safe journey ... our "highways" this morning are covered with ice and snow --- it would take me all day to drive 30 miles.
At least we got lots of 'lectricity

I read here at AW that the flat rate was 125.00 at Sony.

Yep. It'll cost you $125 at Sony, pretty much whatever it is.
So try everything else you can think of first...

Thanks, everyone, for your advice and information. The camera is now at Sony - and will be for at least three weeks - they're a tad backlogged it seems. The technician said they've been seeing a lot of the older Mavicas coming in with major problems lately. And yes, the $125 charge still applies. He said mine might just be the on/off switch or something more major but they won't know until they open it up. I'll do a follow up post when I get the thing back and let all of you know.
Since I really need a camera, I stopped at Target on the way home and bought one of those little JamCams as a back up. (Hey, I can always sell it on eBay when I get mine back, right?). I've just been playing with it for the last hour and if someone can refresh this old lady on how to post a picture that's on AuctionWatch to this board, I'll show you what it does. I was rather surprised at the nice quality pictures for a $65 toy - it'll definitely get me through the next few weeks.
Thanks again, all.

I had that happen too and fixed it by wrapping it with my palm a few times from different angles. No kidding. No new problems.

IMPORTANT!!!! Before you whack it be SURE there is a DISK in the drive or you can knock the drive out of alignment.
This happened to me when I dropped it with no disk in it.
I fixed THAT by inserting (gently), ejecting and reinserting a disk until things lined back up.
