This is a question for old-timers who were around in 1995 when eBay started.

Did they charge fees right from their inception or did they begin implementing fees soon afterward?

It started as a hobby board and then went to dimes. Can you imaigine Pierre sitting rollling all the dimes he got in letters?
You could give him as many dimes as he wanted now and he would need a coal shovel to maake it worth his time to take them.

Thanks gravid. That was my recollection, but I didn't trust my memory.

Maybe instead of charging our eBay fees on a credit card, we should be sending in those dimes and quarters!

No, eBay didn't always charge fees. Once Pierre ISP bill got too large, he had to. eBay has made money since they started charging fees, very different from other e-commerce companies who never post a profit.
