HELP! I just found a beautiful old Royal Quiet DeLuxe typewriter at a thrift shop. It is very old but in excellant shape. Every key works beautifully. It has it's original (I'm guessing) case and all the papers too. I am looking to sell it on ebay, but need more info first. I'm not sure what I have here or it's value. Can anyone tell me (I can email pics) about my new find?

Thanks!

More information please.

It's got to be very old and usually it has to have an unusual key mechanism to be of a lot of interest to collectors. That's my feeling anyway. I could be wrong. I'm just going by what little I know about old typewriters.

OK. I found four of these on completed auctions that had bids and several more that did not. The highest bids on the four were:

$12.05
$9.99
$9.99 and
$86.89

$86.89! I don't know why it went so high and the others went so low. The $86.89 one did have a case with it.

I found those same auctions. I can't really figure out why one ended so much higher. I don't really know if mine has any special keys or mechanisms either though. I know next to nothing about typewriters. Maybe I'll just list it with a starting bid of what I paid for it and see what happens. I do know that it would sell better if I had some information about it to offer in the description though.

So if anyone out there knows anything, PLEASE let me know.

Hate to tell you this but I went and looked again at the big $$ auction and the others too. The problem is that the $86.00 price on that one probably can't be taken for real. It looks like some bidders with hotmail.com addresses bid it up to the hilt, for whatever reason. Most of the others had cases with them so that doesn't seem to help the price any.

You might get 10-12 bucks, jmo.

I can tell you EXACTLY what it's worth. It's worth whatever the high bidder pays for it minus listing and FVC fees.

Put it up and see. Start it a $10 or $15.00 more than you paid with no reserve and charge actual shipping plus reasonable handling so you don't lose $ on S+H.

I have 2 of them myself but I won't be selling them on GreedEbay.
The statement below is TRUE
The statement above is FALSE.

I am slowly finding out info online. Actually I found a site for antique typewriter collectors. I may try to sell to them instead.

Anyone know what a platen is? This needs to be in good condition, but I don't even know what it is.

The platen is the roller. It was made with a rubber coating and if that has hardened then you cannot use the typewriter. You can poke it with your finger nail to see if it has hardened.Your nail should be able to make a small dent in the rubber. I have quite a few old typewriters. Mostly portables. I believe the one you have is from the 1940's,the truly collectable ones are earlier-pre 1920's [unless they are rare models]. You might get $10-$20 dollars.

I sold one for $25.00 plus $10.00 shipping about 2 months ago. I think it was a greenish color case that it was in and it was in perfect condition. I got a positive feedback from the buyer so i am sure she was happy with it.

Oh yeah, and by the way, I paid nothing for it. My neighbor threw it out and I picked it up off the curb.

The general rule for old typewriters is as follows: If it looks like a typewriter, it's not worth the cost of shipping. If it doesn't look like a typewriter, it might very well be collectible. (One early model, for example, didn't have a shift key. Instead, there were two complete keyboards -- one upper case, the other lower case.)

That said, I have gotten $30-$50 in an an antique mall for typewriters that looked like typewriters, but only in excellent condition, with all the logos & stickers present. My guess is that they were bought as decorative objects, not by colectors. I haven't tried selling any on eBay.
