I had never used PP's Instant Purchase as a seller or a buyer. Tonight I won an auction and it had the instant purchase link at the bottom for PP, so I thought why not? I got a pre-printed form with all the information and the correct final bid price. However, it did not show any postage. I could not see a way to add it. I went ahead and sent the payment and contacted the seller. She wrote back for me to be sure and add in the shipping. I emailed back, I couldn't do that because it was not an option for me at the time of payment and I would have to send her a seperate payment for the shipping. So, that is what I did.

I have seen post where sellers have made the comment that they have received payments through PP where the shipping was not included and they had to notify the buyers to annie up the shipping. Could this be one of the reasons buyers are shorting sellers the shipping when using PP?

If you do use the instant payment option as a seller do you have to manually enter the shipping for each auction or can you enter an amount as a default and have it automatically added to all your auctions?

Thanks in advance. Sulyn

When sitting up the PP instant purchase you can add a shipping charge default amount. The trouble with this is shipping is different for each item. I know I have received payment without the shipping and buyer has done a second paypal transaction just for the shipping. They can also cancel the first transaction and redo it with shipping.

rarriffle-Thanks for responding.
I guess then using the "instant payment" option for PP isn't really a good idea.

I know that if a seller has a premier or business account, they are charged for every transaction so having to do the two payment thingie isn't very good for the seller. It's not good for the buyer either if the seller request another 30 cents for the additional transaction.

I will be sure and not use the instant payment link again. I'll just go into my PP account the "old fashion" way and make payment.

I was under the impression from the email I received from the seller, that she was under the impression I could just add the shipping to the total before making the payment. I should have just backed out when I was unable to find a place to change the total due or enter the amount I wanted to send.

Live and learn. Maybe someday I will actually have all this figured out!

I would say your seller wasn't familiar with how the Instant Purchase option works. He apparently didn't see that the seller must set up a shipping charge when adding the logo to the auction. If it isn't set then, there's no way to add it later (as you found out).

As a buyer, I've only used the PP Instant Purchase one time and that was last week. As a seller, I've never used it. On the auction last week, the shipping was calculated but I wanted to add insurance. I changed the final auction amount to $1.10 more to cover the insurance, sent the payment, and then emailed the seller to let them know to add the insurance. Maybe next time you can just add the shipping price to the final price of the auction, if it hasn't already been calculated in. Like I said though, I'm not real experienced with these type of PP payments.

I'm not sure how or where I changed the price, but I did. [ edited by copzsweetheart on Feb 11, 2001 11:01 PM ]

I just used the PP Instant purchase on a Big Ticket item (Over $3000)and when it asked for shipping i put in the highest amount I got when checking with UPS. so then when I do the final calculation I will refund the overage if any. I figured that way would be the easiest way to handle it.

As long as no one has bid on your item, you can modify the link in your auction description that takes you to Paypal and add "&shipping=4"

4 can be the dollar amount for shipping no quotes. I think decimals are okay, but no dollar signs.

I don't use use this feature anymore because a buyer modified the link one and changed the shipping value from 4.00 to 0.00 one time.

If the link was encrypted or scrambled, I would feel more comfortable about using this feature.

Thanks,
Sun W.
