I hate to feel so stupid, but I think my brain is fried today and I can't get the hang of Roman Numerals. Specifically, what year is MCMXLVIII? Does anyone have a chart handy? I'd love to copy and paste it for future reference. Thanks!

A letter repeated once or twice repeats its value that many times (XXX = 30, CC = 200, etc.).
One or more letters placed after another letter of greater value increases the greater value by the amount of the smaller (VI = 6, LXX = 70, MCC = 1200, etc.).
A letter placed before another letter of greater value decreases the greater value by the amount of the smaller (IV = 4, XC = 90, CM = 900, etc.).
A bar placed on top of a letter or string of letters increases the numeral's value by 1,000 times (XV = 15, XV = 15,000).

Thanks for your help! Junebugbooks--that site is so handy! Just type in the Roman Numerals and it comes up with the correct year. I've got it listed in my favorites now for future reference. As my daughter would say--"Waaayyy Kewwlllll"

DATES/ROMAN NUMERALS

M = 1000
D = 500
C = 100
L = 50
X = 10
V = 5
I = 1

( 1 ) IF THE NUMBER ON THE LEFT IS LESS THAN THE ONE ON THE RIGHT YOU SUBTRACT THE TWO NUMBERS.

( 2 ) IF THE NUMBER ON THE LEFT IS BIGGER THAN THE ONE ON THE RIGHT YOU ADD THE NUMBERS.

EXAMPLE: I X = 9
EXAMPLE: L X I V = 64
EXAMPLE: L X V I = 66
EXAMPLE: X I = 11
EXAMPLE: M M C L X X I = 2171
EXAMPLE: M C M L X L I X = 1969

If you don't want to figure it out yourself, try this site http://www.guernsey.net/~sgibbs/roman.html
