Okay, here's one for you guys. I sell wedding dresses on ebay. It moves my dead stock that wouldn't otherwise. It just burns me up when some jack-off bids and then a day or two (or more) later, retracts it. Common reasons are" I bid on the wrong item" or "I bid the wrong amount". I thought this was a legally binding contract when you bid!! They have a chance to VERIFY their bid!! Wedding dresses are an emotional item. People get caught up in the moment, and waste my time. GIMMEE SOME INPUT PLEASE!!

Report bid retractors to safeharbor. They will issue them a warning.

OKAY!!! I just had another one!!! Two retractions on the same item within an hour . The reason for both was " I bid on the wrong item." COME ON you just now realized that after 2,3, or 4 days!! They are bidding and holding a place on an item then when they find another one they bid on it and retract the first bid. How do you stop it????

The only entity that states an eBay bid is a "binding" contract is eBay.

I have yet to find a legal authority that confirms anything on eBay is legally binding, except eBay being just a "venue" and not responsible for fraud.

Yes I've been getting lot's more bid retractions lately too.

Mostly new users.

It's way better than a deadbeat and ebay does note the number of bid retractions on that users feedback page.

Hello Cletus,

"I thought this was a legally binding contract when you bid!!"

Whatever gave you that idea? Winning an auction forms a legally binding contract. Which often costs more to enforce than the value of the item itself should either party break the contract.

If you find bid retractions to be onerous then report each retraction to eBay and let eBay handle it.

cletusray,

Is it possible that a competitor is contacting your bidders, thus the retractions? Two in one hour on the same dress after having a bid on it for over 2 days is maybe too much of a coincidence..

Just food for thought,

Sometimes a lot of bid retractions can be an indication of tampering by one of your competitors - whether they are bidding on it, or emailing your bidders telling them why they shouldn't bid on it.
A few bid retractions here and there are inevitable, but if you are getting a lot of them, particularly on the same item, I would report it immediately to safeharbor. If it is going to effect the final price (i.e. only a few hours left), I would even consider cancelling the auction and re-listing it in a few days.
Just a thought.
