This is odd, for me. I had someone pay me through PayPal last Tuesday with an "e check" and it is still uncleared, today, 1 week later. Normally these take about 4 days (have for me in the past at least). Could something be holding it up or has anyone had these take longer than other transactions?

When I've gotten then it seems to take about 4 days also. Did you check your account on PayPal to make sure? Often I don't get an email and I just happen to go on my acct and see a payment or something cleared and I received no notice of such...You probably did already, but it's just a thought.
OR, just another thought, maybe since it's been a week and it's still not cleared that means that it didn't clear on their end....

Hi,
The echecks clear in periods of business days and I would expect it to take no longer than 3-5 business days (unless the transfer was rejected by the bank it was coming from). Please exclude weekends and holidays from the counting period.

It still has not cleared. Should I email the buyer and ask them to just send a money order? Or should I just keep waiting?

I had one clear in three days. For the most part I consider an item paid once the money is sent even if PayPal doesn't.

But it's not paid for. The money isn't in my account yet. I am not sending any merchandise until I actually have the money, either in cash, money order or a balance in my PayPal account. Right now that payment is not in the balance, it says UNCLEARED.

If it's uncleared you aren't "supposed" to consider it paid. This is the same as a check. There's a very small possibility that the bidder doesn't have x dollars to cover this amount. Even with a regular payment it still takes days for it to show up in your bank account once you withdraw it.
Frankly clearance time is a banking concern and adds no value to your transaction. That's why I ship on notification of payment or receipt of a check.

Hi libbyparsons,
I would wait until it clears. The item can be canceled until it clears in.

mballai - that's just a difference of the way we do things. I can't just give my stuff away, even if it's only for $13.00 Until that balance shows up IN my account I am not sending the merchandise. If the person doesn't have enough to cover the amount, or cancels it, I dont get my money and they have the item otherwise. I am not doing that.
I just was curious as to how long this should take because any others I had have only taken a few days.

Hi Libby,
Wait until the money is in your account before sending your merchadise. PayPal has caused me problems, but they are pretty good on the whole.

The odds of someone not having $13.00 in their account is rather small. The cost of them putting a stop payment on something like that is not worth it either. If you don't trust them to do the transaction properly in the first place, why are you in business with them?
FWIW I don't "give my stuff away" After more than a thousand auction and Internet transactions, the only non-payers never even made a payment.

Hi meadowlark,
Have you contacted the user to advise them that the payment is not in your account? It could be the result of a typo in the email address.

Don't ship until that e-check clears! I've seen buyers' e-checks declined for lower amounts than $13.00.

What are you selling? The bad check/echeck is usually from people who buy certain things. I only had one NSF check where the bidder promptly paid it all, including my bank fee, in cash.

You know, last year, I had someone bounce a check to me, for $3.00 .. the cost of 1 box of girl scout cookies. Not all banks provide "overdraft" protection .. so if the person, who wrote the check has only 2.50 in their account and they write a check for 3.00 .. it bounces.
The difference, between a physical check bouncing and an e-check bouncing is the fact that you actually have the check in your hands and can take action on it. If it's an e-check, you're going to have a much harder time collecting on it.. because it's not physically in your hands.
Because of this, it would be wisest to wait until the funds clear and are in your account before shipping the package out.

mballai-
Nothing high-risk... nothing in the usual suspect categories. In fact, I deal in a very low-risk area.
But anybody can bounce a check. And an e-check can fail to clear for any number of reasons -- including a glitch in the system.
A buyer's e-check failed to clear just this week. The buyer contacted me right away and is sending a money order.
I certainly wouldn't ship until an
e-check clears.

Well the e-check was declined. The customer wrote me in a panic not wanting me to relist her item, which I won't of course. She is sending me a money order unless she can do PayPal another way. If I'd have sent the item I'd be out $13.00 and I just can't do that.

Paypaldamon,
I will email both buyers who told me they were paying with PP and let them know I have not yet received their funds. Thnaks for your advice.
It looks like my earlier post here was removed. I had left in the name of the item and the closing date. I guess it wasn't anonymous enough.
