Yes, the bidders are getting sharper and looking for better "deals". Yes, our costs of doing business are going up - way up. It doesn't seem to me that any of this is new. We each have "our way" to do auctions and think it is the *best* way. Rarely have I found anyone who says " What I am doing is wrong and will produce a real mess, but, I am going to do it anyway " Have you ? Some people like different auction sites than eBay and it works for them or it seems they wouldn't do it. eBay doesn't seem to produce for some particular items at a profitable level. Like many others, I don't find eBay particularly a fun business partner, but big corporations rarely are. We have had to change our product line to find items we can make a viable profit on. When my suppliers of product raise prices either I raise prices to my consumers or drop the line. This seems like to me what is happening on auction sites and we have to raise prices or change product. As the auction sites raise fees some sellers are going to be forced out and some will find other sites or other products.
