I have several heavy boxes to send and was thinking about shipping these via UPS instead of USPS. We're talking 30 + lbs. ea. here. I sent some stuff via UPS at Mailboxes, etc., but it seemed like this was more expensive than it should have been. I assume they do a mark-up, but if so, how much? Would is be better to stick to USPS since this is mostly printed stuff?

Mailboxes, etc charges a huge amount more than the actual UPS charge!

Collegepark: Mailboxes is *very* expensive.

If you are in College Park MD there is a UPS drop off center in Laurel that would be no more than 15 minutes north of you on 95. Laurel exit Rt 98.

I go there sometimes with heavy parcels. I can get there in 30 minutes and driving the Beltway from Connecticut Ave.

It is well worth the trip for heavy stuff.

I tried Fed Ex ground (yes, you must drop it off at a Fed Ex center)recently for a pair of fragile art deco lights. They weighed about 18 pounds and I shipped them from Mpls to LA,insured, for 13.00...very reasonable,I thought.

MBE is outrageous, price-wise. A while back I had some heavy packages that I needed to mail. UPS was $8 or and for MBE to ship UPS it was around $14. So I called ups to see if there was a close UPS office, there wasn't.

The UPS guy said I could set up an account with them and they would come out to my house and pick up the package. Almost too easy!!

I believe that UPS will pick up your packages and you will not have to go to MBE.

I just set up an account with UPS. You call before midnight for next day pickup & there's no charge. They just increased rates so it may be incorporated in the cost .. they bill you weekly. It's great!

Office Depot has a partnership with UPS. They do not mark up. They started rolling out the program last year and it isn't available in all stores yet so you would have to call the store near you.

UPS will do a onetime pickup and you do not have to setup an account. Just call the 800 number to schedule the pickup. I think they charge a small fee for this service. But it is far cheaper than Mailbox etc. and cheaper than gas. Only problem is you will need to be home/office when they come by. If you get regular UPS shipments, than you can judge pretty well where you are on the daily route.

Also, you need to have the address, dimensions of the package, and weight prior to calling them.

When I was a new seller, I shipped a saddle via mailboxes, etc. It was around $25.00. I know now, to ship the SAME saddle to the SAME area directly through UPS is around $16.00 with a one time pick up.

I wanted to mail a $3.90 priority item (already packaged and addressed) a couple of Saturday's ago because my local post office was closed. They told me the fee would be $2.00-$3.00. I told them that was ridiculous !! They replied "Well, we have to make money, you know". I waited until Monday.

I use UPS Internet Shipping, where you can enter all your shipping info, print a receipt and a label for your package.

To ship the package, all you have to do is hand it to any UPS driver or drop it off at a Drop Off Location. Most Mailbox, etc - PostNet, and similar stores are UPS Authorized Drop Off Locations.

So you can still take it and drop it off at your Mailbox, etc - but not pay their fees.

Let me know if you have any questions

srsalas,

I like that idea. But I still think the post office is the best place to send items under 2 lbs.
