This has happened to me before and has always puzzled me. Can somebody please explain this?
I see an item I want to bid on. There are no bids yet. I bid above the minimum bid and get the message "you have been outbid by another bidder".
What "other bidder"? How is this possible?

This has happened to me when the ebay database indexing gets behind. You see an item that *appears* to have no bidders, but it really does, you just can't see them (yet). And if their proxy bid is above yours, then you get that notice.
Ebay gives (rightly) priority to keeping the bidding uptodate, and updates the listings less often, so this can happen....

The same kind of thing happens, for the same kind of reason, if your browswer has cached that web page and doesn't refresh it. It stores the "zero bid" version of the page, and when you bid, it goes to the "real" version that has bids.
