While reading the boards, I've seen several posters indicating they have multiple ids, or a buying id and a selling id. Also that their id at AW is not the same as it is anywhere else. What is the theory behind this? I had never given it a thought, but now my curiousity is burning. (P.S. How do you change it at AW?)

I only have one ID on eBay, but I don't use that ID here on AW. There have been cases where an AW member has been harrassed, or their auctions have been messed with by someone who picked up their eBay ID here on the boards. I doubt this happens often, but "better safe than sorry".

I don't use more than one ID on eBay, but am only a casual seller and buyer. If I were selling more full time, I would probably have two ID's. The reason's I've seen given are usually good ones.

Reasons for multiple Ids:

Selling ID
Buying ID (if buying within your selling category)
Private ID (If you don’t want those who know you to check what you are buying – gifts, etc.)
2nd Selling ID: for selling different types of products that don’t necessarily go together. If you set up a gallery under one ID you may want to show only one type of item.
Contingency ID: to have one ready to go “just in case”.

The list goes on...

Now go on – get another ID!

Don't forget for deadbeat bidders to place bogus bids. I have a clown right now bidding on a modem where I cancelled his bid due to a recent rash of negative feedback. Most likely he got ahold of someone's account. Low and behold, 5 minutes later, a brand new bidder with a similar id, and very convenient aol email account, has bid on my auction again. I'll have to wait for the last minute to cancel his bid. This little cat and mouse game will probably end up costing me $20-30 ! Listen up ebay. How about a moratorium on bidding for a least a couple of days to prevent these losers open up a new account and place bids within a matter of minutes?

I still don't get it!

Why one ID for buying and one for selling? Retaliatory neg issues?

2nd selling id for different products? Why?

Thanks

Bobo
For me, I use my second "Buying" ID to purchase items for personal use

I really don't care to have any bidders on my auctions (98% collectibles) wonder why I just place d a rash of winning bids on lingerie right before X-mas...some of the folks I sell to would be "put off" by this type of activity....

OK.

One more time with some additional explanation.

Buying ID (if buying within your selling category). If you are selling within a category and also buying within a category, you are probably running the risk of pissing off customers when you snipe them as a buyer. With a Buying ID you remain “anonymous” to your customers.

2nd selling id for different products? Why?

Say that you sell clothes, Rookwood pottery, machine tools and general antiques. For additional exposure you list your items in a gallery or use Auctiva gallery. The chances of someone being interested in all four items is quite slim. Customers don’t want or need to see the mix of items. The shipping, terms, etc. are also quite disparate. If using a hosting service such as AW it is easier to just set up a separate account to manage the separate categories. This also holds true if you are running auctions as two separate businesses.

And now a question for you, bobokiki2:

Why bobokiki2? Was there a bobokiki1?
