I don't believe I have EVER searched for an item by category. I think the whole category aspect of Ebay is greatly overblown. If you are a collector, you search by name. If you are someone looking for a newer item, you search by name.
It seems the only people who would search using categories, are people out to buy something with nothing in mind!
Using the category system is a pretty inefficient way to search.

Powder:
I'll have to respectfully disagree to some extent. I have a particular item I search for and if I use general search I get tens of thousands of irrelevant crap. If I do a search from a category I get what I'm looking for. Of course, I do run the risk of missing some items, but by the time I scan through thousands of items, that one or two I would have missed probably would have closed by the time I got to them anyway.
90% of all searches I do are NOT within a specific category, just a few are though.

I disagree as well. Some of the items we sell are very strange. I hardly know what to name them, so I can assure you that no one found them by doing a search. They had to browse the categories to find them and we sell a lot of them. And I will also add that over 90% of the bids come on the first and last day.
