Hello everyone. Recently I had a bidder from Indonesia win a high end auction. I recall there being many fraud alerts regarding credit card usage from this country. Is there anything else I should watch out for? Is the mail system bad there? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The mail system in indonesia is notoriously bad. I would tell the guy thanks, but no thanks, or else be sure to tell him in big letters that the shipment is at his risk.

There are also rampant reports of fraud coming out of Indonesia. Under no circumstances should you take any type of CC payment other than maybe BidPay.com (and that assumes BidPay will accept it - they have a good fraud prevention system in place).

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I was optimistic at first because the gentleman sent me an e-mail right away with his address. (He knows I will not take a CC). He did ask specifically for FedEX shipment. Now I am thinking this is not gonna go through at all because he is bidding on a ton of computers and other high end items AND he just registed a few days ago. We'll see what happens. Thanks again.

**DANGER WILL ROBINSON!!**

Listen to wbbell! The big problem there is the fraud situation coming out of Indonesia. It is rampant beyond belief. Since you don't take (stolen!) credit cards, he will probably disappear into the woodwork.

Good luck & be super cautious!

I am canadian and import from indonesia. There is two things you should know . 1 conputer products are cheaper in indonesia. 2 if it is a conputer ...he need to know that it may not work on his voltage ..personally i would drop it and not let him bid...sorry but i go over there and everything everyone has told you is true and there is even more . If you want to get the run around continue dealing with him...but remember most of the insides of your systems come from asia already

Hey Todd! What I am really finding fascinating about what you said was regarding the fact that computer stuff is cheaper in Indonesia. That combined with the fact that many of the people bidding with stolen credit cards are, apparently, bidding these auctions WAY UP to buy the stuff. It must be easier to rip people off on ebay than to just rip someone off locally for the computer equipment. That's amazing!

And, by the way, I don't have anything whatsoever against people from Indonesia or anywhere else for that matter, I am only responding to the problem with fraudulent purchases that seem to be so common there.

Although I have been to many other parts of the western south pacific, I haven't been there. Would really like to go.

Sometimes we don't understand much about people of other parts of the world if we have spent our entire lives in one country. The experiences of traveling are invaluable! I wish everyone could have the opportunity to travel extensively.

It's in Indonesia. Unless the money was in the form of CASH, wait until you have POSITIVE proof the money has made it. If they PayPal'd a payment, don't ship.

Ask them to WIRE the money straight to your bank, to be picked up by you. (it's sort of a general delivery way to get money) If they are a fraud they will balk.

Here is an update,

This guy that ordered from me was using a stolen credit card. I called AMEX and they got in contact with the customer who had the card. Sure enough, he did not order the products.

Let me say, NEVER ship anything to Indonesia unless they sent you cash or a wire transfer.

I just learned about credit card fraud in Indonesia from AMEX. That is a serious problem.

I emailed him to ask him if he would wire the money to me since there was so much credit card fraud in Indonesia.

I am curious if I will ever hear from him again.

My parents lived in Jakarta for 12 years. One day my mom was returning to the car and noticed that the hubcaps had been stolen. The chauffeur had been in sitting in the car the entire time. I don't think anything was ever stolen off the car as long as it kept moving, or at least above 15 mph.

Hi All,

I got an email from my Indonesia high bidder that says the following:

"i'll pay you use my credit card i hope you agree. i need your positive feedback
immediatelly. ASAP"

I replied that I do not accept CC (as my ad states) and will be happy to recieve money order or cashiers check. That was several hours ago. I havent heard back yet. I suppose the ASAP wasen't all that urgent (or maybe it's a time zone thing).

Anyway, I am curious to see if my bidder will send a non CC payment. I am concerned at this point. If they do not they have cost me a substantial sale as they out-bid another bidder that has good feedback. My Indonesian bidder is also the high bidder on many items (all within the past few days) and most of them are big ticket. I have done some research on fraud from this region and I am afraid that some of the sellers may be in the process of being "taken." My urge is to do something to warn them that something may be amiss here. Is that appropriate? I'll post the outcome of this for those that are interested.

Thanks for all of your comments and advise.

Hi zippoholic,

I would be interested in this if the user attempted to pay via PayPal. Please feel free to send the information to [email protected].

I would cancel out the bids from this guy, even if he was legit the postal system and govenment is so crooked in Indonesia that your stuff will never make it.
Another huge credit card scam country is Nigeria, be careful dealing with the ex- Soviet Union also.
I think it is a shame, but thanks to the internet the gap between the wealthy nations and developing nations is growing wider. If your country can't even provide decent mail service, phone communications, and a stable business climate its only going to get worse as the information age progresses.
