Thanks again to everyone who posted in my previous thread on my dead Sony Mavica (an FD7, out of warranty). Here's a follow-up for anyone interested.
I took the Mavica to my "local" Sony service center (25 miles away down one of the busiest freeways in Southern California...) and it was well worth the trip. They charged me a flat rate fee of $137 total to fix the camera. The part that had gone bad was the floppy drive block assembly which they replaced (gave me back the old part). I picked the camera up this morning and it's working perfectly again with a 90 day warranty.
Needless to say, I'm thrilled to be back in business and can't say anything but good about Sony's service people. My local camera store had given me an estimate of $250 to fix the camera so I think the flat rate fee was a bargain!

The local camera store would have just sent it to Sony and charged you a too dumb to find the manufacturer fee. Glad you did not do that.

That's great! It's thoughtful of you to come back and tell us how it went Sure cheaper than buying a new camera, huh? I think I'll do the same, if something goes wrong with my 71...don't need any new bells and whistles.

How does one find out where their nearest Sony service center is? Don't tell me to look in that manual thingy that I misplaced after 1 day...
