I think the entire solar system [known planets] was legally purchased by someone in Ontario? That's probably who you saw selling the plots at the mall.
Don't laugh, from what I've read this guy has made a small fortune in the past 6 months.

I seem to recall a UN treaty early in the space program that prohibits any nation or individual from claiming ownership or rights to any portion of the moon or any planets.
Based upon that, anyone with a copy of Printshop can make up bogus land titles and collect money for them. (or at least until uncle sam finds out)

actually the UN stated that no Nation could own it
...they did not say any person!!!!! or company..it called a loop hole
I looked it up before i invested!!!!

MrJim
You are correct! I believe the loop hole he discovered was that a "business" could indeed purchase land titles. He ran it through numerous govt's, including the U.S., and the deal was done.
At least that's what I read .........

Didn't I read somewhere that this was done before with even closer real estate?
Something about the New World, Kings/Queens and a long drawn out dispute over ownership.
I think the largest army (of lawyers) wins.
Sure hope they don't change the name of the three stars I paid to have identified in honor of grandchildren and a friend.
I have a business associate that comes from there. It mentioned that land is often sold but not the mineral rights and both easements and building restrictions are part of the deed. I would read the paperwork carefully.

Trouble is if you do not USE land anyone who actually uses or lives on it it can go to court and ask for title. There are lumber companies in Michigan that lost land because people put a trailer on it and lived there and were able to document it in court with photos of their cars with various license plate to show how many years they had lived there, and testimony from people who made deliveries etc. Now these companies do an photo survey of all their land from the air every year to make sure nobody homesteads.
So if you don't have transportation the first person who gets there and uses it will soon
be the new owner as law tends to follow migration and you can expect earth law to follow earth people.

True story. One of the streets next to Rockefeller Plaza is used as a public street, but is actually private property owned by Rockefeller Plaza.
Once a year, for one day, the owner's close the street to prove they in fact own the land. If they didn't the city could take the land after a certain amount of time (varies from state-to-state 10 to 40 years).
The law is called Adverse Possesion.
Every home owner should know about it, otherwise a neighbor could build a shed on a part of your property, and if you don't say anything about it to him/her before the term of Adverse Possesion passes the land under the building becomes their's and they can gain title to that portion of your "former" property.

The technology to support spacecraft is getting cheaper and cheaper. The government is stuck using the space shuttles that are obsolete and they had a choice of several vehicles to replace them and pumped tons of money into the one that basically looked most futuristic on a poster even though others had already advanced to the flight testing stage. Now due to all sort of problems they can't even get to a prototype stage and have abandon the project. There is nothing else in the pipe - just the Shuttle that uses obselete computers and solid fuel rockests that have never had a failure rate less than 2%.
There will come a time when it is so easy and cheap to go to the moon compared to the advantages that private companies will go ahead and pay for it without government money.

Let's see....You would have to upload an image of each plot and launch the auction you are selling through AW at a cost of $.05 each and then pay them 1% of your profit. Then there is Ebay's recent increases in fees. NOW, the big question...HOW DO YOU MAIL THE PLOT OF LAND? UPS or USPS ? What will they charge?
Hmmmmm, sounds like the profits are dwinding..

"A 1967 international treaty holds that everything in the solar system, except Earth itself, is the property of everyone in the world and no one country."
There is no loophole eastwest. It's not illegal to sell them, but anyone can print their own (bogus) certificates.

I DID look (not "looke" ) it up. I copied and pasted the quote.
You must be looking up the quote on a website that is SELLING these bogus certificates. They changed the quote so that people will think it's legit. No one would buy them if they knew the truth.
Wake up, Earthling!

These guys should be going out and hunting for Meteorites.
My Gramps used to have a 1 lb chunk of what was confirmed by NASA and independent Laboratories as a chunk of Mars. A collector bought it for nearly $750,000 10 years back; one specimen (an 11 lb chunk of Mars) was quoted for $5 Million recently thru collector circles.
There's even a guy who makes his living selling meteorites, and he makes some decent scratch every now and again.
