With the possibility of a major storm coming on the east coast I am scheduling auctions to launch Mon. & Tues. in case we lose power.
I am curious as to where AuctionWatch is actually located. I had assumed California but? And does AW ever 'lose power'?

California just had 6 straight days of rain. We dried out for a few days but now another big storm is on the way. We usually don't lose power, but if we do it is generally only for a couple of minutes although last year we had a power outage lasting 2 hrs.
Earthquakes are more likely to disrupt power in CA than storms. We rarely get lightening.

I'm guessing you don't have much to worry about re: AW and storm related power outages. I'm pretty sure they are in the Bay area and storm related outages in the business districts are rare.
More rural areas are another story
I'm in CA and last month during a storm we lost power 3 times in one day alone, the longest for about 6 hours. When power was finally restored the power surge fried the wiring on one whole side of my house (still don't have it all fixed ... ugh!)
We have a major storm hitting the coast right now. High winds ... which means we will likely lose power again
I use an UPC backup, so I have time to shutdown when we lose power, but not to stay online for any extended period of time.
You might have problems with bidders being able to access your auctions during a storm, but your auctions through AW are likely safe.

Just A Thought!! Instead of scheduling for after the storm why not before the storm! There will be a lot of people snow bound with nothing to do but sit in front of they're computer's!!! Just A Thought!!

You guys are lucky. In my area of the eastern seacoast we measure power outages in days not in hours!
(and yes, listing ahead is a great idea)

dadofstickboy - LOL!!! I had that exact same thought. I'm in central NY and we could get anywhere from 1 to 3 feet of snow in the next two days. I'm going to be busy listing tonight. Wish I had listed more last week so they'd be ending in the next 2-3 days!
I'm PRAYING the power doesn't go out. I love storms but I hate not having electricity. During the blizzard of '93 neither our power nor cable went out, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Just got back from the grocery store, what a zoo!

I'm in the Central Valley in CA....and am running on generator power right now...
We lost power around 08:45 PST....
Regional radar shows heavy rainfall in the San Francisco Bay area...looks like that big storm they've been talking about is coming ashore....
Also, Los Angeles is getting some tropical moisture from this storm......
Most technology business have backup power for sensitive equipment....I'll wager AW has either a large UPS or generator to run their computer and telecom equipment...
Hope everyone back east is OK...that Nor'easter is lookin' pretty nasty...
Good luck!

AW is hosted by exodus, the same people that host ebay, hotmail and many other sites. They have enormous bunkers that are packed to the hilt with generators and batteries.
In the event of a nuclear war I'm headed over there.

We're getting a storm???!!
I'm in NY - more upstate/western NY and I haven't heard a thing about a storm. Of course, I've done nothing but sit in front of this computer for the past few days so no wonder I don't know what's going on!

ExecutiveGirl - Turn on the Weather Channel LOL!
The storm is a nor'easter so the further west you are, the less you'll get. It sounds like Albany is going to get socked. I'm a couple hours west of Albany so we won't get quite as much, but they're saying at least 12-18 inches in Rochester.
P.S. I just looked outside and we're already getting a light snow. I think the worst is supposed to be tomorrow afternoon. It's a slow-moving storm that is expected to last 36-48 hours!

Thanks for the update Joanne!
I am very close to Rochester. I'm not looking forward to the snow. I hate this weather! I will not drive ANYWHERE in the bad weather.
2 days ago there was a really bad accident right off my road where a man was driving to work, he lost control on the icy roads and ran into an oncoming delivery truck and was killed. I just found out it was the husband of one of my postal clerks. Very, very sad.
