Letter post, airmail, or possibly surface, depending on speed needed. Surface is about half the price.

Have a look at the USPS website http://ircalc.usps.gov/

I am not sure about insurance though. I can't tell if it is available from the website.

You can mail up to 4 lbs through Global Priority Letter Post (used to be Small Packet). It cannot be insured through the USPS, but an insurance service such as U-PIC provides insurance for all parcels leaving the US at half the cost of USPS.

After 4 lbs Parcel Post rates apply.

1 lb to England would cost $8.70 Airmail or $3.80 Surface.

When shipping internationally, I quote both the air and surface rates and let the buyer choose.

Most select surface, but some are in a hurry and choose air mail.

And here's my little re-cap on Customs charges for the UK...

If you are sending merchandise, and the value is more than about $30 INCLUDING postage, your buyer could incur customs charges. This varies according to the duty tax imposed (by type of good), but will also have "Value Added Tax" of 17.5% on the amount over the "duty-free" limit of about $30 PLUS an administrative charge for collection of between £5-10.

If you are sending more than one item, it would be better if the parcel was addressed to more than one person, as each person gets a "duty-free" limit. So, if you are sending two widgets, with a value of $40, with $12 postage, your buyer(s) will be exempt from duty if the parcel is addresses to two or more people.

For gifts, the duty-free limits are raised to $50.
