I have been working with Verisign as a secure server recently. Have begun to notice it also on a lot of websites for credit card transactions.

A few months ago, a payment site called Paymentalt popped up. Everything about it screamed fraud to me. The text was stolen right off Paypal's site. They talked about verification, $100,000 protection, international transactions with no mention of what these meant. There was no mention of who was behind it other than a Yahoo ID and a phone number that was never answered. I warned folks to stay away. Someone responded that they had to be legit because they had a verisign logo. So I contacted verisign and gave them the details. They told me that all the logo means is that the site has a business name registered. Nothing else. Paymentalt disappeared, no one got the referral fee, many of their customers reported that payments they made were never received by the other party, others reported fraudulent charges on their credit card and I have heard the authorities are seeking the owner. Yet this "business" operated with a Verisign logo. So what does it mean?
