Here's your chance to get up to speed on all those acronyms we see on eBay and the message boards. I'm not sure of some myself, maybe your chance to come up with some new ones. So thought I'd start things rolling with a few...anyone else?

eBay:

OOP = out of print (books)
MIB = mint in box
MOC = mint on card
MIP = mint in plastic

Message boards:

BTW = by the way
LOL = laugh out loud
NARU = not a registered user
PLMK = please let me know
ROTFL = rolling on the floor laughing (all kinds of variations on this one).

Hi Athena,

thanks, that one had me scratching my head. Seems like every now and then I see one that has me trying out all kinds of word combos, but when I see the actual meaning it seems so obvious.

Hi Kitty,

NWT: good one, especially for the people selling clothing.

NearTheSea:

Hope you don't have to use that last one too often!

Oops, sorry NearTheSea, should be careful of making acronyms of people's names.

nts,

ems = eat my, um, er, shirt!
bioya = blow it out your ... behind

eg,

lol, that one had me befuddled for a while, too. it's dear/darling/damned husband, depending on one's mood or husband, i guess.

btw, this is a very good thread. wish i'd had it to read back when i started!

nts,

you know i just realized 'nts' is one - needless to say

this also got me to thinking that shorthand for my name would be ... eeeek! why oh why didn't i go for *two* 'kitty's!

lol, i guess you go by context. as in, 'my dh deleted all my email,' vs. 'my dh has offered to do all my eoas for me.'

Thanks NearTheSea!!!

Whenever I saw it I figured it was something out of luck due to the context.

Thanks again! I can stop wondering now

Hi Kitty,

thanks. Seems a lot of things can be taken out of context if one looks at things sideways. We've all had cases of having "foot in mouth" disease. I wasn't even sure if nts would mean something; ovbiously it does.

Even though I've got a blue star, I'm still clueless about some acronyms and wanted to fill out my and other's dictionary some.

I've always heard SOL as "Sorry, outta luck".
Another one seen frequently in emails/posts is IIRC "If I Recall Correctly".

pharlap (didn't see your question until after i posted), nts, and rca,

fwiw (there's another! = for what it's worth), i've heard sol as ... what nts said

rca, iirc - good one! scratched my head over that one for a while the first dozen or so times i saw it.

tornwiii (is that your name? font on netscape's so inky dinky on some pages, despite my having set it to be larger), lol, i must spend too much time online.

to add to the 'opinion' ones, imo = in my opinion, imnsho = in my not so humble opinion.

country, lol, i've sure had my share of fimd - hey, is that a new one? think it'll catch on?

Hi Kitty

I'm working on some book descriptions lately and in the process found some bookseller's terms:

FE = first edition
HC = hard cover
PB = paperback
DJ = dust jacket
BCE = book club edition
BOMC = book of the month club

With a few exceptions, these last two types of books do not seem to be highly sought after by book collectors.

DebRay: kind of brings a whole new meaning to PITA bread doesn't it?

Edited to correct spelling.

TIA= Thanks In Advance!
DH is always dear hubby to me ~ some of the other "DH" definitions are more fitting as DexH!!

HA! I always read TIA as "transient ischemic attack" (like a mini-stroke). I thought people were saying that they're customer's were such PITAs that they were giving them strokes!
