This week I had four four-year old web sites locked out by tripod.com for unknown and unspecified reasons. Of course, they don't feel I'm worthy enough to get an e-mail from them.
I started moving the remains to Geocities and went to repaste some Bravenet.com cut-and-paste codes, only to discover they forgot to include essential portions of the codes.
Tonight I see my images are not showing on eBay because Honesty.com is about to crash or something.
I'm beginning to think a lot of these www techs belong in institutions and not free to roam the cyber world making a mess of people's lives.

Absolutely...I'm checking out domains now. Still, I'm amazed abvertising supports some of the fly-by-night operations. Says a lot for their supporters.

I subscribe to a few graphics newsgroups, and in the past couple of days there have been numerous posts from people whose sites were deleted by Tripod for alleged "copyright infringements". Tripod never specifies what these infringements are. One of the people swore her site was completely original - all graphics created by her, all the text handwritten by her.
Someone else mentioned they had heard Tripod was going bankrupt and that maybe they were just shutting down servers one by one.

Regardless of whether a service is provided free or not, one should maintain a certain degree of professionalism. If I do something for free for someone, I don't lessen the quality of what I do because I offered to do it for free.
There used to be a time when people took pride in offering even free services. Remember when the gas station folks used to wipe your car windows? Maybe not...

Lycos Shuts Down Some Web Sites
WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) - Web portal Lycos said Monday that it mistakenly shut down an unknown number of Web sites through its Tripod Web hosting service during the weekend while cutting off customers who violated their service agreement.
Lycos spokeswoman Dorianne Almann said the company regularly shuts down sites for prohibited member conduct, including threats to minors, stalking, and racially or ethnically offensive material.
She said a number of sites that did not violate the agreement were also mistakenly shut down, but would be restored within 24 to 48 hours.
``The pages that were removed on purpose were in direct violation,'' Almann said. But shutting down the other pages ``was definitely not something we did on purpose.''
Almann said sites operated through Lycos' Angelfire site may also have been affected. She said she did not know how many sites were affected.
Lycos, owned by Spanish conglomerate Terra Lycos, is the fourth most visited digital media property, with over 32 million unique visitors last month, according to research by Media Metrix.

This is why I decided a year ago to splurge the magnificent sum of $10 a month for my own domain name, 50 megabyte site, unlimited email Ids and just about round-the-clock support. It is unprofessional to run sites the way you described them. It is also unprofessional to run a business and rely on these free sites and get hot under the collar when something you got for free isn't reliable. You get what you pay for.

I got my domain from a consultant who has been setting up large business sites for a while and about a year ago he started setting up smaller sites. As I said, he got me everything including the domain name for $10 a month, responds to emails very quickly and has been extremely helpful when I ran into html and javascript problems. I don't know what the rules are about posting "ads" here, so you can email me or visit my site (I gave him a big, unsolicited plug) for more info.

Hey there's a light at the end of the tunnel.
Just typed in my tripod address and got this message:
We apologize for the removal of your site over the weekend. Due to some technical errors, we mistakenly removed several member sites and are in the process of restoring them. We did not single out you or your site, please accept our apologies as we work to remedy the situation.
