I bought some toys from a Canadian seller on ebay. The bid was $80 for some toys.Box should weigh about 12lbs but a couple of pieces are large requiring a large size box. I checked usps price it was $26.00 now this guy wants $80 shipping!!!! for a total of $160. My question is this Is shipping from Canada that expensive??? Should I have him throw out the 2 large pieces to reduce the box size?? $80.00 is too much as far as i'm concerned. I did email prior to auction end about shipping but he only replied after auction was over. Any advise would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like your seller is seriously confused.

I'll be right back with more info for you.

I am a Canadian seller. Before passing judgement on what sounds like a huge rip off I need to know the following:
How is he sending it? Courier or Canada Post
What are the dimensions of the box.
Did the seller list that buyer pays actual shipping cost or is there handling involved?

Go here for the Canada Post to USA shipping info.

http://www.canadapost.ca/CPC2/intntl/info/cs_usa.html

The extra size of your parcel, won't make that big of a difference. Oversize parcels to the USA are charged an extra $7.00 Cdn [approx $4.70 US]

Insurance is $1 Cdn for every $100 Cdn value.

Use 6 Kg [approx 13 pounds] as the weight total and see what you come up with for a shipping total to your location.

We also have something called "Minimum Density Weight", which will lead to "lightweight" items shipped in large boxes costing plenty extra. But unless the box is mega huge, $80 US still seems rather hefty.

Surface Post is the least expensive option for shipping to the USA.

red(d?)eer:

Thats why I asked for dimensions, the dimensional weight on large light items is
sometimes equivalent to shipping cement blocks. But I agree $80 US seems crazy even for a very large package: BTW depending on terms of sale, the seller may not ship by surface. I don't, too many lost broken items and the ones that did show up sometimes took 2 months to arrive. I have a back log of over a dozen claims with Canada Post. I refunded the money to the bidders months ago and Canada Post is giving me the run around. Weasels.

I've shipped hundreds of large heavy items via Surface Post, and never had one arrive damaged nor have any gone missing.

Items shipped via Air get just as rough treatment [or worse] as Surface post. I've seen parcels getting tossed like footballs off the plane, down to the loader 15 ft below, and sometimes they miss the catch.

But you're correct, some sellers only ship via Air.

It is possible that it may be cheaper to ship in more than one box. If some of the items can fit in a small packet air-sized box the rates are significantly cheaper and the minimun density rules don't apply.

It depends on where you & your seller live.
The further away you are from each other, the more it will cost.

If you post the Postal code of the seller, and your ZIP code, one of us crazy Canucks should be able to give you a ball park figure.

BUT, in order to be accurate, we'll also need the dimensions of the parcel/box.

I have to hit an auction soon, so I'll be gone for the rest of the day.

Ok, the seller is in Zone B, and you fall under rate code 3. [which is the max]

At 6 Kg [13 pounds] the price for Surface Post would be $17 Cdn [$11.33 U.S.] IF the Minimum Density Weight rules didn't apply. But even with MDW applied, and an Oversize charge of $7.00 Cdn [approx $4.50 US] that still shouldn't take you anywhere near what this seller has quoted you. [at least not for Surface Post]

As an example of the extreme. Let's say he was shipping you a 66 pound cannon ball in a
1 ft square box, the cost from Saskatoon to SC would be $62.65 Cdn [approx $40 US]

If I'm mistaken on any of this, I'm sure someone will jump in & correct me.

spellin, it's early here ....

You have to keep in mind that it's pretty hard to question the shipping cost for your items unless we know the following.

A. The method this parcel is being sent by. [Canada Post - Air, Surface, Xpresspost USA] or UPS, Fedex etc.

B. The actual dimensions of the parcel so MDW can be calculated.

C. If actual shipping costs were quoted in the auction, or if the seller charges a Handling Fee.

FYI - I saw at least 2 other Canucks respond to this thread as well.

I just reviewed the auction, and since there was no mention of a "handling fee", or being sent via courier, and the seller checked off: Buyer pays actual shipping charges, IMHO the seller needs to take another look at the Canada Post site.

Good luck, you might need it?

Looks to me like you are going to have to educate a rookie seller. Get the info reddeer has asked for and let us take a closer look.

BTW, the Canada Post web site is

http://www.canadapost.ca/CPC2/menu_01.html

For $160 your could buy the package a seat on a plane.

I think that the issue here is the new Minimum Density Rates. Large light packages cost a fortune.

Postal clerks don't have a good handle on this yet, and frankly even for experienced shippers, this is a difficult concept and a more difficult calculation.

It is extremely important to have this shipped in as small a box or boxes (by cubic measurement) as possible. Of course it has to be large enough for safe shipping.
