I just got an email from the eBay forwarding system to my buying address.

Bonnie,
Just checking in with you to see if you received the Cashier's check for the backgammon books.

I am not Bonnie, I don't sell backgammon books, and I haven't used this account in several months anyway. My first concern was that someone had lifted my password, but there doesn't appear to have been any activity on the account.
I replied to the email asking for more information, including the transaction number. Immediately after sending it, I wondered if perhaps this was a dummy message for the purpose of obtaining live email addresses.

I'd be suspicious, too, and especially because I'd wonder why anyone would send a cashier's check to pay for backgammon books. They'd have to be worth an awful lot to justify the cost of a cashier's check ($5 or so last time I checked).

Up until a new months ago my bank would give you 3 free cashiers checks a month if the funds to cover the cashiers check were part of your available balance.
Getting back to the topic, there is a hole in the new email forwarding system right now because people are using it to send spam and then Ebay says "We need the full headers" which anybody who knows about headers will know that it will only be traced back to ebay's servers...
