I have given up on shipping UPS myself. I only ship that way if the buyer absolutely must have it that way. And I always tell them why. And so far only 1 buyer has still wanted it. And guess what?

I have shipped ups many times. Been good so far.[knock on wood] mostly for large and heavy Items.
Anything else goes by post. I do pack for a war zone, but I always cross my fingers.

In the real world, I work receiving for a major retailer. We get expensive (breakable) crystal, etc. via UPS and I can't begin to count the number of times our driver has softly placed obviously non-fragile objects on our dock plate and then pitched packages marked "FRAGILE" across the dock plate to the concrete floor. This isn't accidental. Obviously, even though the merchandise I sell at auction isn't breakable, I don't ship with UPS. Too much on the job experience.

I go with FedEx Ground most times - or I should say my customers choose it. I always give at least 2 shipping options on bigger items. Smaller items I always use USPS - either parcel post, first class or priority.
FedEx ground has been MUCH cheaper and the service has been great. No problems with them damaging my packages.
