I have 5 megs of storage that comes with my ISP connection. Also I use Auctiva Poster (eposter) software. My problem is this: I need about 20 megs for all my auction images over several weeks. Don't want to use Ebay's stuff. Auctiva charges 50 cents per auction!
Etcetera. Have tried these places that offer free web pages, but there is always a glitch.
Willing to pay 5, 6 bucks a month...does anyone know of a company that simply offers webspace cheap with no banners etc, and allows uploads via the ftp program my software uses. (most of the "free" web sites force you to use on-line software to upload images, I find.)

For $10 a month, you can get your own domain name, 50 megs of space and unlimited email IDs like [email protected]. I did it almost a year ago and have been kicking myself for not doing it sooner. I have had no down time, I get all my email even if someone misspells the name (anything that ends in ygoodman.com will go to me). And the company that set it up also helped me with the html and javascript. I have sent several people to them and they have been ecstatic. You can visit my site for details.

www.pair.com offers 50 MB per month (you need an FTP program to transfer the files -- WS_FTP LE is an excellent selection) for $4.95.

You might check out the following. They were recommended to me, but I haven't had a chance to check them out yet.

I'm using fatcow.com and am deleriously happy. $99 per year gets you 100 megabytes of space and up to 100 different e-mail addresses. They'll also register a domain name for you for free [although you have to oay the annual $20 renewal fee after the first year]. They also have services available like on-line shopping carts if you want to actually sell things from your site instead of just hosting images for items being sold at auction.

Oh, yeah -- they also have the best phone support of any company I've ever dealt with, bar none!

Barry

Barry: I sometimes do website design for friends. After checking your post here I also checked out fatcow.com and decided to give them a go with a new project that I have been hacking away at for sometime now.

What can I say. They are absolutely the best of the best!!!! Thanks so much for posting the info here. I am an exceptionally happy camper and so is the fellow that owns the website.

For $10 a month it just doesn't get any better!

20 Megs of Photo's!

Thats a lot of pictues.

A proper AUction photo should be no more than 100K bytes each, preferable much less. It takes too long to doen load otheriwise.

SO that's 200-300 photo's

You are using .jpg aren't you?

Anyone using .bmp should be shot.

Unknown,

Just depends on how many auctions and what you list. I have over 3000 scans that I rotate through about 2000-3000 auctions every 2-3 months. That's a lot of storage space needed or hours upon hours of uploading and deleting. Oh, and they are ALL JPG.

Ditto what Barry said!
Fatcow is the greatest thing since sliced bread as far as I'm concerned.
My pics load fast and I don't have a lot of advertising for other services in my auctions.
It's highly unlikely that I'll ever use up all that glorious S P A C E !

Two places I would look for space.

rockethost.com
500 megs / $10 a month

readyhosting.com
500 megs / $99 a year

Both have lots of great features. rockethost gives you 10 FTP accounts, so you could theoretically share one among 10 sellers who each get 50 megs. $1 a month! Not bad.

readyhosting gives you coldfusion, asp, and sqlserver 2000 thrown. great for web masters and database driven sites.

Holy cow... I just took a look at readyhosting, that sounds too good to be true!! Has anyone signed up with them? What kind of experiences have you had?

Stamper3, freeyellow.com looks good.

20 megs, no setup fees, and you can't beat the price -- free -- if you run their banner ad. If you're using the space for photo hosting, no one's going to see the banner anyway.

Their domain name registration, should you want one, is only $29.99 ($20 subsequent years, or $49.99 if you sign on initially for two years).

I'm going to give them a test run with a little project I've been cooking up. Thanks for the tip.

I tried to use Freeservers but my images were blocked.

I have been using hostmatters.com but there is another one called below10host.com that is cheaper. Both are reasonable.

Bad news ... it's free, but there is a TOS and they do expect users to follow it.

9.5 It is impermissible to use FreeYellow servers for the following purposes:
(6 uses deleted)
9.5.7 To act as a file repository or to serve files for other sites; or

It is extremely easy to set up a web server to deny all connections to graphics unless the request comes from a page on the freeyellow servers, or specifically deny requests from certain servers (like eBay's). They can also easily substitute the image of their choice for the auction image as they ship it out, so pictures that look OK when you check turn into something else on eBay.

Just like Tripod and a couple of others did ... suddenly a lot of auctions were showing TRIPOD ads where the widget pictures used to be. And the howls of anguish were piteous.

Pay the $5 to pair.com or fatcow, or live in fear that your images will be deleted by the free site whose rules you are breaking.

It's funny.... When I first found out about fatcow.com, I kept thinking "this is way too good to be true", and I kept looking for the catch. I mean, last time I checked, everybody else was charging as much as $100 per month [sometimes more] for "business" style web hosting. Well, since that time I have noticed that more and more web hosting sites are offering great deals like this. I don't know what has suddenly changed, but I'm certainly not complaining!

I'm sure the free sites [with their limited webspace and banner ad requirements] still have a place in the world, and I'm greatful they were there when I needed them. But for less than $10 per month I am SO never going back to a free site!

Thanks, abacaxi, but for the project I'm working on, I'll be in full compliance with the TOS.

I did note, though, that freeyellow users may opt to pay for the space, in lieu of a banner, for $10/mo.

This site fits my needs better than any I've found thus far, because I needed a reasonably-priced freestanding domain with site registration on the cheap.

Freeyellow will cost me less than $3/mo. Hard to beat!

I am sorry if this sounds like a stupid question. I don't much about these things...well to honest...next to nothing!

Is fatcow.com like a homepage? Can I use Paypal on the site? Or do I have to use a regular merchant account.

I buy my packing peanuts from a page that has a PayPal button you click on and make the purchase. Can I put this PayPal button on a page at fatcow?

Thanks!

You can put a paypal logo on because PayPal gives you the html of the logo to do it. I don't know if it is clickable though. I am starting to use homestead.com for a store front, but you can use it for anything you like. It is free but I don't know how much space it has. Lots of interesting elements and clip art there.

Fatcow.com doesn't support Paypal. They told me I need to hire a programmer to have Paypal on my website. They have 2 merchant accounts and they are super expensive. For a beginner like myself. I am very frustrate on setting up an website.

jwoodcrafts: FatCow is a Web hosting service. They give you space to put anything you want -- including a homepage -- onto the internet. And on your homepage, you can put anything you want, including a Paypal link.

My understanding is that FatCow offers some basic tools for e-businesses, such as an on-line "shopping cart" that can be used with one of two merchant accounts they have an arrangement with. Apparently, their basic shopping cart template cannot be used with other payment services like PayPal. But keep in mind that their shopping cart template is just an extra option that they offer. You don't have to use their template, and if you want to create your own shopping cart using Paypal you are free to do so. The thing is that you are on your own if you want to do this.

As for me, I don't have an e-business, I have no need for an on-line shoppiong cart, and I wouldn't accept Paypal if you paid me to do so. If you want to set up an e-business with a shopping cart that accepts PayPal, and don't know how to set this up yourself, maybe FatCow isn't the place for you. As a "cheap webspace for images", however, I think they are terrific.

Someone just told me that myspace.com gives 300 mb for FREE. Haven't gone there yet so I don't know if there's a catch or I heard it wrong. Worth checking out though.

basketman: That sounds like it could be a good way to go for PayPal users who want to set up a shopping cart on a hosting site such as FatCow. I looked around and found the following:

The "Create Your Catalog Page" form is used to create a catalog page showing one or more items linked to the shopping cart system. The information that you supply in this form will be inserted into an HTML "template" of your choice to generate the HTML for your Web page. When you have finished defining your page, you can download this HTML to a file on your own computer and then transfer that file to your own Web site.

Here is a copy of an email message I received from Fatcow about 10 minutes after I sent it inquiring about accepting payments via Paypal...

- - - - - - >

The information for a normal credit card process would go into the secure/orders directory on the user's
site. It is accessible with password by user after order is placed and email receipt is received. That is if
the "secure" module is selected. The other methods of processing are automated processing through
CyberCash, Authorize.net and Linkpoint.

Here is the html code for processing via check, Paypal etc. taken from the shopping cart author's own
site from the email.htm page (checkout page of the cart).
