The problem was a bug in the Microsoft code that has been known since AT LEAST 8/05/99 (the date the page about the bug, at http://msdn.microsoft.com/visualc/headlines/2001.asp was last updated). And the patch was released in the spring of 2000, after the Y2K stuff was cleared.

So with months to install a patch that was made available in the spring of 2000, why did we have this problem? What was eBay's technical staff doing during those weekly "maintenance" periods, besides installing more site-crashing doodads?


And what other preventable problems are we going to have because eBay doesn't keep up with the releases of their operating system?
