I am planning to snipe an auction interested in using a snipe program from a third party, because I will be unable to access the internet myself at that time.
I am tempted to use TWO of the common snipe programs to make SURE that my snipe is placed.
I wanted to ask the buying pros: as I understand it, I will NOT really be bidding against myself, right? If BOTH snipes get through I won't drive the bid up to my actual limit by virtue of both bids being placed, will I?

If the first snipe program couldn't get through to eBay to make a bid, I doubt that the second program would be able to get through either.

I've done it. But I've used two different prices, just to see which one went in first. Esnipe has really gotten their act together, and where I used to allow 7 seconds to place a bid, I now use 3 seconds. I've also placed a bid manually (through ebay) and then sniped it at a higher price, just to make sure, and got it at the original bid price. (lower) hope this helps.

I've never used sniping programs, but I do occasionally put in an early lowball proxy and then "double down" in the last few seconds even if I'm the high bidder, just as protection against other snipers.
As long as you're using just one User ID, placing another bid to increase your proxy (or having 2 snipe programs place bids within seconds of one another) should not have the effect of "bidding against yourself." You'd have to be using multiple ID's for the price to go up.
