Going through jewelry the other day I came upon an absolutely gorgeous jet-bead and silver necklace (about 16"in an old family member's effects. It is signed "Weiss." Anybody know about this company? When I searched Google.com I got a lot of extraneous stuff, including newer jewelry shops with Weiss in the name. My costume jewelry book has pictures of a few Weiss pieces but no history whatsoever.

Hi roadsmith,
I don't know anything about jewelry but within the last week there was a great thread about vintage jewelry that was originated by 'packer', I of course forgot to bookmark it.
This site also contains one-paragraph histories for Hollycraft, Florenza, BSK and Art.
If the link doesn't work, I'll quote the Weiss paragraph here:
"A costume jewelry designer and manufacturer, Albert Weiss opened his own business in 1942. His factory was dedicated to hand-set pieces only. He realized the importance of quality rhinestones and bought them from Austria. Weiss introduced the gray rhinestone that started the black diamond trend - a craze adopted by many companies thereafter. He also designed a series of Christmas trees, made in Germany with the Weiss logo. The company closed its doors in 1971."

I don't know anything about the company, but I do know the name sells pretty well. I picked up a bunch of old earrings a couple of years ago. There were 3 pair of Weiss clip on earrings that each did well over $25.
It's one of the names I watch for when going through thrift shops and garage sales.

Thanks, experts! I appreciated the links (I had already printed out the jewelry link here but had questions that weren't answered in that thread). You are all very kind. ~Adele
