Hello. I dont know too much about computers. Here is the problem that perhaps someone can help me with. I only have 28 ram memory currently in the system. All works fine for basic stuff. But when I get into the internet, it slows down a lot. My modem is a 56k. I run AOL. An example is when I go to Auctionwatch- I am typing my ads and I have to keep waiting for the advertisements to load. Then it times out and I get cut off.
Should I add more memory? I was going to go with the cable line for faster connections but it is not offered in my area yet. Any suggestions? Also I should point out, even when I go to Ebay it takes forever to load and once again times out. Just for the fun of it, I had AOL 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 and same results. Thank you for your time.

Yikes!!

28 is WAY TOO LITTLE!!!! Win98 takes up 32!!

RAM is very cheap right now!

Go to www.crucial.com and pig out!!

My pc is 256 now & I'm going to DOUBLE that this week!

Bluroks I presume that you have a newer PC with a Pentium class CPU running Windows98. If you don't, get a new cheapo PC! 64 megs of RAM is the absolute minimum for Windows and you and your PC will be happier with 128 megs. You'll need more RAM only if you edit videos and serious graphics or are a rabid gamer.

Hello, are you SURE you have 28 Mg. of RAM.
that sounds like an odd number... I suspect you have 128 mg. of ram. An easy way to tell... shortly after you turn on your PC, the ram is counted in the upper left portion of your screen... the numbers stop at the amount of RAM on your PC. Check it out..
RAM chips come in multiples of 16... so the possibilities are 32, 64 or 128 (it would be nearly impossible to run these days with 16 mg. of ram or even 32!).

It's AOL! The software is a bloated memory hog, and the service is usually overloaded.

To gain speed, see if you can turn off the picture loading.

Ram chips do not only come in increments of 16. He could have a 4meg, 8meg, and 16meg simm installed or 6 4meg. This would be barely adequate for Win95, usable for Win 3.11. The problem is worse, since the modem he has is probably a "win" modem which uses the computer's processor cycles. Adding more ram and switching to an external modem would help dramatically.

256 or 512meg would make no real difference in Win98. Win2000 Pro is the only really stable MS desktop OS.

It is AOL for sure. I run a Celeron 433 with 224 (yes two hundred twenty four) megs of RAM, and I still cannot keep a connection to AOL even with a properly configured modem. I have learned a way around it by closing all running programs then signing on AOL.
But you need to upgrade your RAM for sure. I even have 40 megs on my old 486 because AOL 4.0 needs to have a lot of RAM.

I seem to have discovered another Netscape 6 bug. Every time you visit the thread by forwarding and going back, it sends your post again. Sorry all.

I have AOL and 64 MB of RAM, and AOL doesn't give me any problems. The only program with which I've had memory problems is PaintShop Pro.

Surely there must be a Board @AW for computer related issues?

My guess is that you have 32 megs of ram and a video chip on the motherboard that is using 4 meg, leaving 28 for windows. As others have told you, this is way too low. 64mb is the minimum you should be using. With RAM prices at the bottom now, get at least 64mb and 128 would be even better. Otherwise, you could save even more money by trading in your machine for a 486 because that's about the speed you must be getting.
