Okay.. so I have a rather large box of widgets that I have to send to a winning bidder..Yesterday I took the box of widgets to the post office and the clerk there tells me it will be $10 to ship the widgets. I send one box off with no problems.
I quote my customer.. (and a dozen others) the $10 shipping price based on the cost of shipping this package.
I take another box to the post office today.. (different clerk, same widgets, identical box, same weight) And the new clerk tells me that the shipping on these widgets will be $30 per box because the boxes are oversize! AARRGGHHH....
this would have been fine if I had known this yesterday before I packed all these widgets in the big boxes AND told my customers that the shipping will be $10.
As far as the post office is concerned, it's my problem, and the fact that they quoted me incorrectly is not of their concern.
I am so angry I don't know whether to scream or cry. My question is this.. How should I tell my customers about this without seeming like a flake? I know I can repack the product in different boxes, but until I do so I don't know what shipping will be. Should I wait to contact them once I figure out how much shipping will be, or should I notify them of the problem a.s.a.p.?
Then you won't have to rely on the vagaries of USPS clerks...you'll know if your box is oversized in advance, and can quote shipping prices accordingly.
If you can get your merch in a smaller box, you should be okay, if you use the USPS measurements at the site I gave you. The weight must be what she was going by. I hope.
