I bought a lot of jewelry at an estate sale last week.
In the lot was a ring on the inside it is stamped BRASS DO NOT SELL.
Has anyone ever seen this stamped before?
I wonder if it's a sample or some such any ideas?

I know some custom jewelry makers who cast demos in brass that has the right % of copper to look very much like gold. When they get an order for the real thing, they get the gold out of the safe and make a real one.
Stamping them would keep them from being sold by mistake.
Another use for the brass rings is in sizing, particulary for wide band rings. Keeping a full set of sizing rings of various width in real gold would be quite an investment.

Joe -- What you have is definately a sample. Jewelry salesmen often carry these instead of a "live" line in case of robbery or loss.
